Uniform
The bare white walls burn my eyes
As a small part of humanity dies
So plain, and empty, and unadorned
Tell me, will this loss be mourned
When all the art is taken down
When you flunk out the final clown
When everything is uniform
And everyone hides from the raging storm
When everything is iron and steel
Rusty and cold and unbearably real
When every man thinks just the same
And no one knows how to play the game
When everything is truly fixed
And all the bloodlines are completely mixed
When no one ever disagrees
And life is so cold your heart could freeze
If everyone was of the same mind
A controlled and unified human kind
Only one would be necessary
To inhabit this stale promontory
So argue, discuss, and believe foolishly
Hang your work where the world can see
Paint the walls and hang your art
Shout your poetry from the start
Fight for the sake of being contrary
From day to day let your convictions vary
Because when we all disagree,
Then there’s still a reason for both you and me.
The bare white walls burn my eyes
As a small part of humanity dies
So plain, and empty, and unadorned
Tell me, will this loss be mourned
When all the art is taken down
When you flunk out the final clown
When everything is uniform
And everyone hides from the raging storm
When everything is iron and steel

When every man thinks just the same
