The Story (If you just want the gist of it, scroll to The Plot)
"There was once a world that was the idyllic paradise that mankind had sought for years. No war, no famine, abundant resources...until, of course, mankind came upon it and claimed it for its own. Colonists from Terra found this world and called it Olympus, for it seemed as though the heavenly home of the Greek gods had been made into a planet. They never stopped to question what made the planet such a paradise...
Three years into their colonization process, mankind was already making a mess of things. The rivers ran black with pollution and red with the blood of the native people, who called themselves the Etheniel while the Terrans named them Elves, as they resembled those creatures of bygone Terran myth and had a rudimentary control over the elements. Then, for some reason, none of the mechanical equipment the Terrans brought with them would function. Self-erecting structures halted in mid-construction, cooking devices failed mid-meal, and guns jammed inexplicably. In more than one city, the safety systems of a nuclear power facility failed, and the plant suffered an explosive meltdown. Several towns were slaughtered in retaliation by the Etheniel. The Terran organization soon fell to chaos as the colonists tried to live without their technology...
Over the next few generations, many Terrans died from starvation, Etheniel attack, or attack by beasts driven mad by their pollutants. But some survived. The ones who did survive did so by relying on ancient Terran skills of wilderness survival, or by allying themselves with Etheniel tribes. The Terrans who survived abandoned all high technology, as reliance on it had brought about their downfall. The planet began to recover from its wounds...
Several generations after that, Olympus was as a new planet. Aside from the Terrans, Etheniel, and Olympians (descendants of the Terrans who allied themselves with the Etheniel), there were new sentient species that had resulted from the bizarre mutations brought about by nuclear contamination of terrain. These species were the Mirdai, the Thenar, and Lycants. The Mirdai were known to the humans as Dwarves, due to their short stature and great strength. The Thenar were a race of shapeshifters whose true form was that of a lanky avian creature. And the Lycants were so named because they possessed the ability to take on the form of a beast. They would have lived in their medieval societies alone and with little interaction...had the nuclear contamination not also brought about the rise of other beings, beings called the Lethkirai, Othatrian, and Wraiths. These beings seem to have some hold on the twisted creatures produced by the nuclear contamination, and also seem to have an immense hatred of the other sentient races. Nothing else is known, as all but a few who have seen them have either killed them or perished. Their threat led to the sentient races to form pacts swearing to defend one another from the threat posed by the armies of the aggressors.
The pacts have held, but the borders have not. The forces of the Three, as they are commonly known, have been laying waste to the area for years. Villages of those in overrun territories (known as Pactbreakers) have even joined the Three to wreak destruction upon their own kind. During this time, a curious Terran discovers the remnants of their ancestor's civilization, and begins to ask questions about how they fell of the Etheniel Loremasters. The Loremasters mention a group of higher beings known as the Ancients who guarded Olympus from all that would harm her. On further questioning, the Loremasters alluded that they had a mortal home and a mortal form. This put hope in the heart of the Terran, as they thought that if these Ancients could be found, they could be persuaded to aid the Peoples of the Pact in their time of need. So the Terran left the Loremasters with ideas of a quest spinning through their head..."
The Plot
The plot of this RP deals with that quest. You can be one of the Peoples of the Pact who are searching for the aid of the Ancients or one of the Three/a Pactbreaker who are attempting to destroy the Peoples of the Pact and prevent contact with the Ancients...or contact the Ancients themselves.
Races
Peoples of the Pact*:
Terrans [humans]
Etheniel [elves]
Olympians [half-elves]
Mirdai [dwarves]
Theran [avian shapeshifters]
Lycants [lycanthropes, werebeings]
*: Can also be Pactbreakers
The Three:
Lethkirai [goblins, hobgoblins, bugbears, etc.]
Othatrian [kobolds, draconians, drakes, wyrms, dragons, etc.]
Wraiths [devils, demons, ghosts, etc.]
Combat Styles (Classes)
There are six basic combat skills: Strength (how hard you hit), Endurance (how well you take hits), Speed (how quickly you get from one place to another), Agility (how quickly you can manipulate something), Wisdom (how well you interpret a situation) and Intelligence (how appropriately you react). Classes are based on which two skills you want to be strongest in, the first being the stronger of the two.
Fighter: one who relies on strength and intelligence/wisdom
Warrior: one who relies on strength and agility/speed
Knight: one who relies on strength and endurance
Thief: one who relies on speed and agility/intelligence
Hunter: one who relies on speed and endurance/strength
Samurai: one who relies on speed and wisdom
Mage: one who relies on intelligence and speed/strength
Sage: one who relies on intelligence and wisdom/endurance
Monk: one who relies on intelligence and agility
Note that classes are just to help you keep in mind your character's strengths. To balance out a character, also choose one skill your character is weak in. This makes your character more realistic (and prevents god-modding!).
Weapons/Magic
The weaponry is comparable to that of medieval Europe/feudal Japan, with gunpowder yet to be (re)discovered. There are ancient Terran arms lying around as well, but they are hard to find in working order.
Combat styles that rely on strength generally* fight with melee weapons or heavy ranged weapons.
Combat styles that rely on speed generally* fight with ranged weapons or light melee weapons.
Combat styles that rely on intelligence generally* fight with magic or blunt weapons.
*: Exceptions can be made. Just ask.
Magic, or the Ars Arcanum (arcane arts) as it is known here, is a definite force on Olympus. Though the Ars Arcanum have been applied as long as the Loremasters have recorded, their use for combat has only recently begun. They are subdivided by those who first discovered/applied them: Etheniel (fire, water, wind), Terran (psionic, kinetic), Olympian (spirit-based, illusion), Mirdai (earth, magnetics), Thenar (light, darkness), and Lycant (plant, animal). The Ars Arcanum of the Three mimic the Ars Arcanum of the Peoples of the Pact, as they have learned them from the Pactbreakers. However, profane necromancy and will-bending are powers unique to the Three. Any character can use one form of the arts (i.e. Fire, not Etheniel), but those who rely on intelligence are strongest with it, and they are strongest with arts pioneered by their race.
