Character Discussion Thread- Mrs. Lovett
Welcome to the official Mrs. Lovett discussion thread. Mrs. Lovett's a very important character- without her there would be no A Little Priest, and we'd all miss its wonderful cannibalistic puns- and she's also a very interesting one, what with her motivation and overly practical personality. She's Insomnia's personal favorite. =]
Guidelines for discussion: Your opinion- on the character, her motivations, her actions, the humor she brings to the musical, her past (and who was Albert anyway? :/), etc. Actresses- best/worst Mrs. Lovett, etc.
Rules: Follow the main forum rules. Don't be hatin' No bashing.

Since you all seem to be dead, I'm going to make my own little debate just to entertain myself: What I like about Lansbury: I think Angela really captures the superficial personality of the character. To me, Lovett really doesn't consider the consequences of anything she does. She doesn't see any deeper meaning in why Todd kills people; to her it's all about making money and getting closer to him. Lansbury pulls off that naivity really well. Not to mention her amazing hair which I think makes her just that amazing. What I like about Lupone: Lupone shows a more subtle and scheming Mrs. Lovett than Lansbury does. Her interpretation of Nellie is as more of a self-concerned mistress; everything she does is to better herself. Her intentions are questionable even to the point of whether or not she really loves Sweeney because it's more prevelant that she obviously just lusts over him. She makes Lovett a more 3-dimensional character than she has been previously portrayed as.

i thought carter was a good mrs. lovitt, and i can't help but feel sorry for the character, she was in love and it made her do things that she should'nt have. Like make todd think his wife was dead, knowing she wasn't.

Like make todd think his wife was dead, knowing she wasn't. i agree i think the casting of the movie was really thought out well, especailly for the part of mrs. lovett i was really surprised at how well carter did as mrs. lovett andafter seeing her as that character i can't picture anybody else playing her.

I thought Carter was a little too weak as Mrs. Lovett. She did a very nice job with By the Sea and Not While I'm Around, but I wasn't thoroughly fond of her in the role. Though her acting when it came to Toby... cry That was so sad.

Yeah Helena Bonham Carter is my fav. actress too. I think that she did a great job of playing Mrs. Lovett. Of course Angela Lansbury was great too, but they each did it in really different ways and each one fit their version perfectly.

I can only speak for the movie version, but arguably, Ms Lovett was even more evil than Sweeney.
Firstly, the obvious mega-lie factor. If she had of told the truth Sweeney would have killed Turpin and Beadle for good measure and toddled off to Scotland or someplace with his wife.
She was the one who first came up with the suggestion to kill an innocent person. After Sweeney was angsting over the fact Beadle hadn't come yet, Anthony ran in telling him he was hoping to bring Johanna, and after he left Lovett suggested killing him after he brought her over.
Third, If I remember right, she also encouraged him to enjoy his kills, that half the fun was in the wait. Initially killing wasn't exactly pleasant buisness for him and his first victim was just out of nessessity.
Mostly, she's a FREAKING CANNIBAL. Her idea, not his. She didn't just eat them herself, but she also fed it to other people, including children. Poor Toby. D=
Which leads into the fifth point, Sweeney's victims where both a) strangers, b) adults and c) male. Its not as difficult to kill someone you have no emotional attachment to. However, immediately after Toby was telling her about how he thought of her like a mother and how he'd never abandon her or let anyone hurt her, she locks him in the basement and trust me, she wasn't chasing him down the sewers to give him more gin. Its a whole different kettle of fish to hunt down a child that thinks the world of you.
Nasty woman. D=

I personally think each actress bring their own quips to the table when it comes to Mrs. Lovett
Angela Lansbury- she was an amazing Mrs. Lovett and definately brought out the scariness in the character, as well as the humor. she worked amazingly well with Len Cariou and George Hearn and couldn't have been a better singer!
Patti Lupone- She brought out the shrewdness, scariness, and all around lovableness of Mrs. Lovett. She brought out more of the side that swoons over Mr T. than Lansbury id, and seemed to work well with George Hearn in the concert performance, and Michael Cerveris in the revival. She showed incredible talent being able to act with a limited amount of props or set background, as well as playing her instruments as she acts and sings. Her facial expressions are priceless and hilarious biggrin
Helena Bonham Carter- She was amazing in the role(at least in my opinion) for someone who doesn't sing as a profession she had a lovely voice that paired with her amazing acting talents! she and Depp made one bloody hell of a team and I couldn't have been more pleased with the outcome. I can't wait for april 1st for the DVD biggrin

Personally, she's my favorite by far. I just have this thing, where I have to force myself to distinguish between Mrs. Lovett and Helena Bonham Carter, and how they aren't related at all. She does a wonderful job. Bringing Mrs. Lovett to life, with her voice, actions and all. I just can't beleive how she is in real life, like wouldn't a character have an affect on you like that?? Maybe I'm just too critical...or I think too much.

Mrs. Lovett is personally my favorite character. I love her attitude and just the way she carries her self. I will someday steal everything in her closet mrgreen . Helena is my favorite Mrs. Lovett. She's adorable in the role. Worst Pie's in London, By the Sea and A Little Priest are like... the bomb ( xp My friends would hate to hear me call any thing "the bomb" )because of her.
And um.. I'd also like to know who the bloody H Albert is. (Oh! Could I be him in the cast? lol)
