Character Discussion- Judge Turpin
Believe it or not, kids, this isn't a hate sticky! Welcome to the official Judge Turpin thread. Because whether we think he's a decent guy at heart who's done some bad things or a ruthless villain who deserves the end he meets, he's an important character. Without him, there really would be no plot, and that would be bad.
Guidelines for posting: Your opinion- his true nature, whether he is ever genuine, whether or not he was a good father to Johanna, whether or not he ever had good intentions, etc. Analysis- what we learn about him from his version of Johanna, what we learn about him from the brief trial scene, etc. Actors- best/worst Judge Turpin, etc.
Rules: Main rules apply. No bashing. Even though he may deserve it.

I've only ever seen one professional Judge, and that was Edmund Lyndeck, I think, on the 82 DVD. He's good and kinda makes you like the Judge in a couple scenes. Ladies in Their Sensitivities, for example, he just seems kinda grandfatherly to me. Also, I love the 'bum bum bum'-ing he does during Pretty Women. xD

Oh, man. I've seen the '82 stage version and the Sweeney Todd in Concert thing on Youtube, and both Judges creeped me the heck out. Especially during "Mea Culpa." Oh, man.
Alan Rickman is going to be amazing.
I think the Judge is a great character. Not to say I like him, but he is so messed up and it provides such a great insight into human nature. And stuff.
Well, that all sounded better in my head. XD

I loved Judge Turpin because of the Actor who played him in the production [the movie]: Alan Rickman! I love that guy. He's amazing! I loved the character for the reason that he is quite complex in many ways and in truth he just wants what he thinks is best for Johanna.

i saw the movie and i thought that Alan Rickman did a great job. did anyone else notice in the movie his tight pants. I couldn't help myself from laughing the whole time. I also liked the time when he says " You gandered at my ward." to Anthony. *cough tight pants that are gold dont help but scream stare at me cough*

I honestly think he's the creepiest character ever. I think he's a great character, though. I found him almost endearing in "Ladies In Their Sensitivities" and "Pretty Women", because he wanted so badly for Johanna to love him, but then I was like "Woah, he's a creepy b*****d!" His inner conflict in the stage production is amazing. (Although last time I saw Sweeney Todd on stage was 4 years ago...) The three actors I've seen as Turpin were all amazing. My first time seeing Sweeney was at a local theatre about...hmm...maybe five years ago? Turpin was played by one of my older sister's friends, and he really pulled it off. Revival Turpin(what I can remember) was excellent, and really pulled off showing that there are two sides of Turpin. So, yeah, basically, to me Turpin is an extreme creepy-creep and I hate him, but I still like him. Damn Turpin, making me all confused, with these mixed feelings!

*pokes the thread* Just to make this not a bump... I think the Judge is despicable, but certainly an interesting character. I'd love to find out what influenced him early on in his life. And in the movie, although he may be a meanie, he is still very charming. :3

If I remember right (and I should, I watched the movie a couple of days ago), he smiled at one point and I was like OMG SNAPE SMILES!!!!!!!! Complete HP moment. Alan Rickman rocks as Turpin. Even though I don't really like the judge... XD. I also love the way he says Mr. Todd. Practically exactly like the way he says Mr. Potter in Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone. ^^
EDIT: I forgot to add, since my best friend and I are a little perverted, we love making fun of the "You gandered at my ward" line. We just find that so funny... lol.
