THIS IS YOUR WARNING. If you have not read the full libretto, seen the musical, or listened to the final scenes on either the original cast recording or the 2005 revival, you are about to be spoiled. If you read any further, you will ruin for yourself the climax of the play.
We are referring to this character by their real name. You will be spoiled if you do not turn back now. If you don't care, ignore this message. But if you will cry if you are spoiled, then leave.
Insomnia and the guild crew cannot be held responsible for the spoiling of those who do not heed this warning.

The Official Lucy Barker Discussion Thread
Ah, Lucy. If she were to disappear, the entire plot of the musical would hang in the balance. She's important in many ways, providing the motivation for the main character and being a means of foreshadowing that the characters don't seem to take seriously. Told you there'd be spoilers. =P
Guidelines for discussion: Lucy's importance- to the plot, to the characterization of the characters (redundancyLOL), as a literary device, as a character, etc. Best/worst Lucy.
Rules: Follow TOS and guild rules at all times. Don't bash Lucy. Even if you would be twice the wife she was.

Personally, I always felt for Lucy. She was the reason the wheels in Sweeney's head starting turning for revenge and the reason nearly everybody dies! She's a miserable character who tries only to help but finds herself being shunned by society, the law, and even her own unknowing family. Yea, it really sucks to be her. u_u

I feel bad for her too. It always gets me whenever I listen to Poor Thing how no one did anything about it. I just want to slap them all. But I *do* have a small amount of resentment for Lucy. I think she's a little silly, and a little self-centered. She wasn't exactly thinking of Johanna when she poisoned herself. And I must admit that some of it comes from my fangirlish jealousy. D: but you'd think we had the plague.

The thing is that I think Johanna, though happy (I suppose...) in the end, she never knew her real family and the only parental love and guidance she got was from the Judge (*shudder*) and that's partly Lucy's fault for not being able to protect herself and just high-tail it with the kid.

It's a combination of "you poor soul, getting taken advantage of", "YOU IDIOT! Don't drink at parties, and don't trust people who throw your husband in jail", "think of your daughter, woman! Where will this put her?", and just a pinch of "....you're really lucky to have a husband like that, you know?". but you'd think we had the plague.

She was so lost and oblivious (and drunk), yet I can't help feeling sorry for her. Though, without her, there would've been a significantly lower number of deaths.

Lucy is a very confusing character for me at least... you know, I'm all like, "How crazy is she exactly? And does she really remember Sweeney and why doesn't she appear to remember Mrs. Lovett?" Oh, and I was always curious whether she knows that Judge Turpin's ward is her daughter or not. confused
