I have not heard anything past the "premiers" of the second season. This is what I've read:
FOX Won't Rule Out 'Tru Calling' Return
First, FOX took the Thursday 9 p.m. ET time period from "Tru Calling" and handed it to "North Shore" (which promptly tanked). Then, to add insult to injury, the show's original 13-episode order was cut to a measly six. Finally, after "North Shore" went off to a truncated conclusion, FOX opted to deliver the time period to another occult drama, the sudsy "Point Pleasant." Although it may remain in limbo, FOX refuses to let the ink dry on the "Tru Calling" death certificate. "We finished six episodes of "Tru Calling" and we anticipate putting them on air at some point," FOX Entertainment President Gail Berman told reports at the semi-annual Television Critics Association press tour.
In its first season, "Tru Calling" averaged an anemic 4.55 million viewers per week. The show, which stars Eliza Dushku as a young lady who can speak with the dead, received a creative boost from the addition of Jason Priestley and found a somewhat expanded audience on DVD. The show's small cadre of fans hoped that it could find a new audience following "The O.C." in FOX's slightly rejuvenated Thursday line-up. Instead, FOX has attempted to find better pairings with its successful primetime soap.
"What changed for us was when we saw 'Point Pleasant" we really felt we had a show that was incredibly compatible with 'The O.C.," so our thoughts changed, not so much about 'Tru Calling,' but about the possibility of not only having an exciting show and a winner at 8 o'clock, but also something that could really make headway for us at 9 o'clock," Berman said. While critical acclaim and awards attention managed to save other low-rated FOX offerings like "Arrested Development," "Tru Calling" never earned that kind of regard. It's unclear how, if ever, FOX intends to distribute the show's remaining and lingering six episodes, but no doubt the Internet petitioning will continue
FOX Delays Season Two of 'Tru'
Those who are aniticpating watching Eliza Dushku jump back and forth in time this fall will have to wait longer than they thought. FOX, which is making a habit of filling out its schedules in pencil, has decided to delay the second season of "Tru Calling," which stars Dushku as a medical student/morgue attendant who has the ability to go back in time to prevent untimely deaths. Originally slated to premiere Thursday, Nov. 4, the show will now debut "later in the season," the network says.
The non-specific time frame is usually not a good sign for a show. A FOX spokesman says, however, that "Tru" is in production, which is better news.
Instead of "Tru Calling," FOX will place "North Shore" in the 9 p.m. Thursday spot after baseball's World Series concludes, pairing with "The O.C." for an all-soap lineup. The FOX spokesman says that the move is intended to build momentum on "North Shore" -- which will have the benefit of a decent lead-in in "The O.C." -- after Shannen Doherty joins the cast in late September. Unscripted offering "Trading Spouses" will move into "North Shore's" 8 p.m. Monday spot beginning Nov. 1, where it will lead into "The Swan."
FOX Temporarily Resurrects 'Tru Calling'
When FOX Entertainment President Gail Berman insisted to TV critics back in January that the remaining episodes of "Tru Calling" would air at some point, many a reporter chuckled. Well, Berman may be departing FOX for a creative gig at Paramount, but she's true to her word. The much maligned and already effectively cancelled "Calling" will return on Thursday, March 31, replacing the equally maligned and equally effectively cancelled "Point Pleasant." Originally scheduled to air at 9 p.m. ET on Thursdays after "The O.C." this fall, "Tru Calling" was yanked first for "North Shore" and then for "Point Pleasant" this winter.
"What changed for us was when we saw 'Point Pleasant" we really felt we had a show that was incredibly compatible with 'The O.C.," so our thoughts changed, not so much about 'Tru Calling,' but about the possibility of not only having an exciting show and a winner at 8 o'clock, but also something that could really make headway for us at 9 o'clock," Berman said in January by way of explanation.
It turns out that that experiment was a failure. Despite getting a reasonably large sample for its post-"American Idol" sneak preview, "Point Pleasant" averaged all of 4.09 million viewers per episode, shedding nearly half of the audience from its more successful lead-in, "The O.C." Those numbers were right in line with the viewership for "North Shore" in the same time period. Last season, "Tru Calling" averaged 4.55 million viewers.
The drama, which stars Eliza Dushku as a young woman who can relieve days whenever a corpse asks her to, will begin its six-episode final run with a two-hour premiere on March 31. It will take its planned 9 p.m. slot the following week.
"Point Pleasant" remains tentatively scheduled to air this Thursday before vanishing for the foreseeable future.
