How do you say/spell it?

I put Light, because that's what it said on my subbed DN anime...

Where the hell did Raito come from?

Why?

Was it the aliens? No, it was L on a sugar high...sooner or later he's going to die from a heart attack...too many sweet things. I wonder what his dentist says (if he goes).

XD

Righto is because in Japanese alphabet isn't 'l' so usually it is pronounce as 'r' for example: Dracula - Dracura, Lary - Rary etc.
But author mention in manga it is Light not Raito.
If you listen carefully in Japanese version of anime you can hear that it is pronounce that way (or more like Lighto).

I think I heard somewhere that 'Raito' came out when the Japanese manga was scanned and translated by fans, before it came out in English.
No one was aware that the English version of the name would've been 'Light'.
But it is a fairly accurate translation anyway, seeing as how it's pronounced 'Raito' when spoken in the anime.

I say Light, though. That's what it says in the subs and what it says in the manga, so. xD I don't care much either way about what other people want to call him. o.o

{SONATA} -->

I say Raito.
It's just more smoother-sounding and more fun to say than just "Light." And it means the same thing anyways.

I say Light...
People call him Raito, because that's the way the Japanese can say it with thier Engrish ways.
The T and L sounds are hard for them to say.

Somtimes I call him Raito though, just for a random change...

I call him Raito, too, 'cause thats the original name ^-^
You're right with the Japanese version, in Japan the consonants can only exist with vocals (vocals can be written alone), that means when they want to say Light they split the name in their different signs, but they use the pronunciation so the people won't misspeak it.. That means we would have La-i-t, you all know that L=R so we get Ra-i-t, at least the T can't be alone so we have Ra-i-to.
They use this method often, when there's an u or an o at the end of the word, it's mostly unspoken, although u isn't spoken in the middle of the word as well (you all know that it's [Saske], not SasUke. For example Marik from YuGiOh is written Ma-ri-ku.)
.. I hope you understood it ^^" And it helped you xD

I say light, even tho it's weird....but it's the same thing, raito is just the romanji spelling of it cuz it's not a japanese name..doesn't make sense...But I think both are kinda...weird. I say Light cuz it's the first name I learned.

I usually like to call him Raito,
Personally I like the way it sounds better...
That and to me it makes more sense to call him that,
After all, the kid's Japanese, so why in the world was he ever named Light. Sure, I know that random cross culture names happen, but still...it's just weird to me...thus, I call him Raito ^^

In Japanese, the official translation would come out to being "Raito" because of the way Japanese is spoken and written. It has throughly been explained in the thread by others. The author's original intent was for his name to be spoken as "Light" which when spoken in Japanese sounds like "Raito", so therefore. End of story. I call him both, btw. Your choice is your choice.

BTW, it's sorta in the rules about this. Kay? Further discussion not needed!
