My bible study teacher says that it's not okay for us to get tattoos because it says in the Bible (I forgot what verse though) that our body is the temple of God, and is temporary and belongs to God. Whatever we do with our body, make sure it glorifies and is presentable to the eyes of God, etc.
??? I kindly request that your teacher read the rest of the verse, as I believe Leviticus 19:28 is the verse she is referring to, and ironically it does say not to tattoo yourselves! But let's read the rest of the verse.
" 'Do not cut your bodies
for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD.' "
You see, this was written during a time frame in which many people were cutting and marking their bodies in an occultic practice to worship the dead. And as we all know, worshiping something else other than God is a direct violation of the first commandment.
You see when you mark yourself like that, you are identifying with something. As Christians it is important that we only identify with things that are pure, holy and do not go against God's commands. A simple tattoo goes against God's rules for me? No definitely not, so long as that is all the insignia is, a simple identification with something important to you.
Also some people have a bit of conflict as to whether or not it is proper to get a tatt of a dead person. Now the only question to ask is, "Is it in worship of someone?" Let's take Lazarus for example (sorry to point the spotlight on you mate,) two of his dearly beloved friends passed on and so he got two inks for them. Now let's determine whether or not that was correct.
1. He is not doing this in worship of the dead.
2. The tattoos will in no way show immorality of any kind.
3. His inks will not stand in the way of his relationship with Christ.
Actually the fact that he is identifying with his friends in this manner is really quite commendable, and judging by the above questions it is in fact Biblical.
How much more should permanently marking yourself in servitude of Christ be commendable?
