There are quite a few movies this summer that may be worth viewing, don't you think? Many are ambitious with special effects and CGI.
Feel free to discuss this summer's blockbuster releases here. Reviews are most welcome.

Went to Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix this evening. Although there were many substories that were omitted from the movie, I thought it captured the main story. Harry's teenager angst wasn't as pronounced in the movie (thank goodness! I found his cheese_whine and dramallama behavior in the book annoying).

As many reviewers have said, the movie does really heavily on your having seen the other movies and read the books. I ended playing "fill in the blanks" with my friends during the movie and afterwards.

This definitely was not the best of the HP movies. However, I did enjoy it. There are many good performances (some too brief for me but that's because I just like the actors... Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, and Emma Thompson). I hope they can get the 6th and 7th books filmed before the main three actors (Radcliffe, Grint, and Watson) get to looking too old for their characters. And I thought the special effects, especially in the OWL exams and good vs evil fight, were great.

User ImageThis seems to be the general consensus on this instalment. Eirwyn feels much the same, and those she has spoken with on the topic think likewise.
I trust this will not be the beginning of a downward spiral in the movies. There will no longer be new books to help keep interest strong, so they must make sure the movies are the best they can make.

The Order of the Phoenix will probably be my only foray into a movie theatre this summer. I enjoyed it, but I agree with both of you, Slick and Furamir, that it wouldn't have made sense outside of the context of the previous books--let alone movies. Sirius is one of my favorite characters in the books, and it is hard for them to give him the weight he deserves in the movies. Also, the sequences in the Ministry of Magic probably wouldn't make much sense without having read the books. I feel like the movies hang together best in the setting of Hogwarts--but there's so much more to the books. Speaking of which...

I may have to move to "the stacks" for further discussion of this, but I went to an hundred+-year-old theatre for a special program the night the Deathly Hallows came out. We all wore costumes. I went as Madame Hooch. (I had also cobbled together costumes for Professors Trelawney and Sprout, but the Hooch one was the most comfortable for a hot evening.) The most hilarious/highly applauded costume was a tiny little girl who came as Dobby. Emerging with several hundred other people in costume into an old alley after midnight in Portsmouth, New Hampshire gave a very authentic feel to the Harry Potter experience. I was glad that I did it. I was also pleased with the book.

User ImageEirwyn has a friend who has been watching the movies as they came out, but has not yet read a single one of the books. She was very much lost trying to follow what was happening in this movie much of the time.

We have the new book now! Eirwyn found it at a market called Wal-Mart last night for only $18.00. I will let you know when she has read it. Then we shall discuss it in the Library Bookstacks. smile

I've seen two movies in the past couple of weeks.

First was
Rush Hour 3. If you liked the mindless entertainment between Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker, this installment was more of the same. The story was suspiciously similar to the first Rush Hour. The banter between Chan and Tucker was amusing. My favorite part was the out-takes during the end credits. It is obvious that both Chan and Tucker were having a lot of fun making this movie.

I greatly enjoyed
Stardust. The story, continuity, and cinematography/CGI were all good and the actors were wonderful (Charlie Cox, Claire Danes, Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert DeNiro). After such a very long dry spell of decent movies, this one is a gem!

Saw two more movies this week (thank goodness for matinee prices)...

Hairspray is the screen adaptation of the stage musical. For those who are familiar with the story, the setting is Chicago, 1962, and the plot is based on racial and physical differences. The musical beat is also time period appropriate. It is an interesting view of the segregation issues. Enjoyable movie but I think I would've waited for the DVD had it not been for my friend wanting to get out of the house and see the movie.

Some mindless fun and pleasant memories of Saturday morning cartoons growing up, that was Underdog. The CGI was quite good in making believable conversations with the dogs. The screenwriters even kept the funny theme song (it begins with the people pointing up at the sky and saying "It's a bird", "It's a plane" and "It's a frog"), catchphrase ("There's no need to fear...), and the rhyming statements by Underdog. The casting for Simon Barsinister was perfect. If you need laughs, go see this movie.

It seems that the better previews are being shown before the more family-oriented films. The trailers for The Golden Compass, Enchanted, and The Game Plan were interesting enough to convince me to see them when they are released. cool

I did see Enchanted during the Thanksgiving holiday. It was a pleasant, little story. Some funny lines scattered about. The ending was a little predictable. The character development of Giselle was interesting. One of Rhi's sons said, even when Giselle came into reality, she still acted liked a two-dimensional character but gradually became more complex and real. And he was right!

The trailers for
The Golden Compass and National Treasure: the Book of Secrets continue to grab my attention. I hope they live up to their potential. Last Christmas' offerings at the theaters were awful.

I must give Stardust another favourable mention. It was wonderful fun, though it did make me think of The Princess Bride whilst I was watching it... unsurprisingly. Robert DeNiro was... well, wonderful in his role but it was very, very odd... eek

I'm looking forward to 2008 now.

User Image That was based on a graphic novel written by Neil Gaiman and drawn by Charles Vess, I believe? I seem to remember seeing it in a catalog a few years ago. Eirwyn didn't order it, though. It looked somewhat interesting.

We need to update the title of this thread. LOL!

I have seen a few movies so far.
Wolverine has a nice diversion on a humid day. I don't know if follows the comic book story of this X-Men character as my movie buddy's son hasn't seen it. He read all of those comics when he has growing up. For pure enthusiasts, the new Star Trek story line is going be a problem. Think alternate universe and it's a bit more understandable. Having been a fan since the series first started in 1966 (gads, my age is showing!), I liked the movie. Most of the characters were well portrayed and the story was interesting. If you liked the first one, you'll like the newest Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. Some of the characters who had lesser parts in the first one are featured this time. The story is a fun piece of fluff. Angels and Demons had me guessing almost up until the end ... which is more than I could say for the "DaVinci Code." This was a more intriguing story and I enjoying watching both Hanks and MacGregor. That's it for now.

Have you seen the Half Blood Prince, Slick?
Eirwyn's opinion of this is much like her opinion of Order of the Phoenix.
