Alright, here's what you do...REALLY EASY!
For the ribbon cable (the thing you broke that hooks up to the power and reset button...This thing
http://www.mod-chip.com/en/ps2_ribbon_7_pin.php )...Get a PS1, take it apart, there will be one...It'll be slightly wider though, but don't worry. Take it out, now you need to take off 2 of the sections. Look on the blue part, and you'll be able to tell, just count 2 of the metal things covered by it, and cute down that. Make it towards where you have 2 ribbon cables, connect the wider one to the PS2's buttons, and it'll work. You can put the part you cut off back on the PS1, and it'll still work. I did this with my PSX...Second thing, the laser and the disc not spinning right...It's not exactly either of those.
http://img262.imageshack.us/my.php?image=opentrayni2.jpgOn that picture, you'll notice a yellow circle, that has nothing to do with this.
Where the blue squares are is what this has to do with. These are the bars that the lens slides on. Oh, and do the one at the top like this too. The one that looks like a screw...
You'll notice that they are lubricated. Get something like a glasses cloth and whipe off the lubrication completely. Now get some petroleum jelly (Vaseline) and a few que tips. Use the petroleum jelly as lubrication, and relubricate the bars. Use the que tips to spread the petroleum jelly on the bars, make sure there's not any gunks of it though, so get it smoothed out, take a new que tip and dust off the lens a lil' while your at it. Put your PS2 back together, and play it. =D
Well...That will most likely work, I've repaired quite a few PS2s like that...Heh. I got a free PS2 cuz' it was broken, next day, the guy who gave it to me was over, and was stupified that I was playing it just fine. XD
Yall' be lucky yall' have a geek who knows what he's doing here. ^.^
*edit*
To Pineapple...PS2s do NOT mess up because they are old. They simply need relubricated after like 5 years of having one. Really depends on how much you play though...
However, the slim PS2s...Do NOT replace your PS2 with a thin one. They load faster, and have internet connectivity without a special adapter, but their lifespan SUCKS. I know a good bit of people who have gotten slim PS2s and they have broken before even a year of having them...They spin the discs too fast for the hardware to support, and will burn out within a year or two...Also, if you don't change it to smooth reading, it may screw up some of your older games...The spot where you plug your power cable gets messed up easily aswell.
I hate the slim PS2s because of this...
Oh, one thing about the slim ones...I took a my foot to one, and beat the crap out of it, and it still worked, but I dropped a fat PS2 off my house onto concrete and it still worked. XD
