Hmm..
His real reason?
Maybe because he knew that if he had people he had to protect ((people he cared for)), and that would slow him down on his conquest for power.
He had to clear his mind of other worries before setting out on his adventure for power.
About the whole not killing Naruto thing *cough*SasuNaru*cough*
Nah, but I would say that deep inside he knew he couldn't kill him.
((He doesn't want to kill the only the person he was close enough to be called a friend))
Personally I think he did the same thing his brother did.
He kept telling Naruto that he was weak and that he couldn't even land a scratch on Sasuke's headband.
Why? Because he knew he was going to win, and he actually thought for Naruto's future.
If he keeps telling him that, then later on he'll remember those words and will keep that as a reminder to get more powerful.
Ergo, Sasuke is acting like a big brother, making sure Naruto gets more powerful in his absence.
Going back to what I said about bonds, he couldn't ask team 7 for help, because he actually cared for their lives, so he used sub-bornets, that he could discard and use them as his pleases.
Other than killing his brother, I think he's just trying to show people that he's not weak and that the Uchiha name is not one to be messed with.
