I found the movie fascinating and a letdown at the same time. The imagery was great and quiet impressive, but Kim and I figured out the story before the story even began, just from the image of the girl bleeding at the very beginning. The way people were reacting we were expecting so much more, but it was rather predictable. The so called twist ending that a lot of reviews spoke of wasn't even a twist and the violence was rather tame in comparison to other movies. Maybe it was because I was ready for the brutality of war when I realized it was set during the war and as such I was ready for so much more then what was shown. Then there was the story, maybe it is because I write deranged stories that I didn't find it very unusual. I found the characters the most interesting thing, but as a whole the movie needed much more to compel my imagination.
Well that is just my feelings.

We just acquired this movie and I agree-very beautiful, but very predictable. That is to be expected, though, since 1-del Toro was so adamant in making sure his vision was portrayed and 2-the story is based on a legend and most legends are duplicated amongst cultures and fairly known, making the stories based upon them very predictable.
Even though, the Captain's character is sick. Though for some reason him bashing that guy's face in ended up being quite...exciting...and led to a *ahem* break from the movie on our part.

I just saw it a week ago. I liked it a lot. I didn't find it particularly predictable, though I do think showing her bleeding/dying at the beginning was a bit redundant. Though maybe they wanted to give people the impression right off the bat that it wasn't a happy movie.
I guess I was expecting a little more fantasy elements, I thought it was going to be more of an Alive in Wonderland kind of story. But I wasn't disappointed by the way it was. Also I liked the fact that they didn't go for the contrived "guess if it was all real" plot where it's really not convincing. Like at the end of the Wizard of Oz, or Alive in Wonderland, they act like you're supposed to decide for yourself if it was all real or imagined. But in actuality, pretty much no one would say "I think it was real" with either of those movies. But in Pan's Labyrinth the line was more blurred between the reality and fantasy. Like the thing with the mandrake, or the chalk. If it wasn't real, how do you explain those? So I'm glad they didn't spell it out for us, and left us with some inexplicable things to wonder about. It would have been boring if they'd just gone "omg the plot twist is that none of it was real! she made it all up!" like in Alice and Oz.

I didn't find it predictable, or if it was, it wasn't to the detriment of the film. The film was beautifully shot, beautifully scripted. I loved the creatures. I found the parallel between the magical world and the child's war-torn reality extremely moving. I'm interested in Kat's comment: Quote: the violence was rather tame in comparison to other movies Do you mean that reviews suggested it was very violent, and you thought it wasn't so? Otherwise, I find it an unusual comment. Less violent than say, Hostel 2? Well that's logical; it's not a slasher film. Less violent than...which other movies exactly, and do you mean that as a negative? I thought the violent scenes were emotionally tense, well-executed and definitely disturbing. The whole film was so unnerving, sad and full of distrust that my friend and I went to eat pancakes directly after. Overall, though, both we loved it.

My comment was because of how many people told me how gory the film was and how it was overly violent. Considering the kinds of things I tend to read and write I could not fathom how people could consider the film gory. Considering the film was rated R I was expecting so much more then what there was. When I hear gory I think back to my film studies and usually gore imply "excessive depictions of bloodshed" which there were only two and they were just creepy and not really excessive. I think the movie got a R rating just to keep kids away from the movie because I've seen far worse and scarier movies that have been PG-13 of all things. It really makes one wonder how people rate anything now a days.
Well that is enough out of me.

I also found it emotionally terrifying though, so that may have been another reason for the rating. It was a no-escape scenario and that scared the s**t of of me! Plus, that scene with her step-father and the razor was pretty nasty!

I saw the movie in my Spanish class at school last semester, I thought it was very good.. the only reviews I had seen for it were about how it was a fairy-tale for adults. I think that statement suits it well, i know I wouldn't want any of my younger cousins watching it. I thought the imagination of all the creatures they put into it was extremely amazing, although i wasn't a big fan of the ending.. it was pretty predictable, but the things she encounters through out the movie were far from predictable. The small child eater actually really freaked me out... I don't know why but it really did... anyways smile I'm making Liz watch it sometime because it was over-all an enjoyable well done movie. 3nodding

It was okay, not terrible, not great. The ending was kind of depressing, though... Speaking of which, what do you think? Was it the 'white light' phenomenon resulting from cell death and such, or did she truely go to be the princess?
