This is something I'm always curious about, and I'm thinking of attempting to create a study of some sort out of it. Pretend to be intelligent, basically. What am I talking about? Ah, yes, of course, an explanation. Y'know, life would be easier if you'd all just put a little effort into actually trying to read my mind. Honestly, the laziness that's encountered these days.
Anyway! I'm sure you're intelligent enough to figure out what I'm getting at. Over the seasons of M*A*S*H we went through several changes to the original cast, to say nothing of the tone of the show. But were these changes for the best?
Company Commander: Lt. Col. Henry Blake vs Col. Sherman T. Potter
Hawkeye's Friend/ Swamp Rat #2: Capt. Trapper John McIntyre vs Capt. B.J. Hunnicut
Antagonistic Swamp Rat: Maj. Frank Burns vs Maj. Charles Emerson Winchester III
Company Clerk: Cpl. Walter "Radar" O'Reilly vs Cpl. Maxwell Klinger
Story-telling/ Messages/ Entertainment Value/ Etc: Earlier Seasons vs Later Seasons
Please bear in mind that I'm not necessarily asking which characters you like better, but who you think does better in the role they are brought in to preform. For instance, I've known people who like Henry better as a character, and prefer Henry episodes, but who believe that Potter is better suited for commanding the outfit. Similarly, I've known people whose favorite character is Charles but who are more prone to watching episodes starring Frank.
Also, general consensus on another forum is that the best episodes are the in-betweens; episodes after Henry dies but before Frank gets carted off. Feel free to voice this preference (I'm generally with it myself, in spite of how much I like Charles), but I would like to hear opinions on the comedic tone of the earlier seasons versus the darker, more dramatic themes used in the later seasons.
Just listing off preferences is okay, but commentary and discussion is better. If you could please mention your age and when you got into the series (run-wise; early or late), that would be great.
Thank you for your time. Have at it!

For the antagonistic swamp rat Frank was definitely easier to make fun of, and dimwitted. Winchester is snotty, but on occasion he is friendly with Hawkeye and BJ

Freebird4077 Which head of motor pool do you like better? Rizzo or Zale? I prefer Rizzo. I liked him, too. He was like a mafia guy, but from the south.
