I have this stupid habit or problem. I can't stop making those really annoying airy sounds when I play a note. I know that all beginners need to learn to blow air properly but surprisingly, I never did... and what's even funnier is that I'm NOT a beginner anymore... I've been playing for around 2.5 years. mrgreen

And... I don't have braces -_-" Help?

Well I have some tips.
First of all: Make sure that you are in fact supporting.
Second: You have to use a lot of air. Don't take these little sissy breaths. And push the air out fast and consistently.
Third: If you are doing those things and your sound is still airy, try sing play.

In case you don't know what that is I will try to explain the way I learned it.

First, you sing just about the lowest pitch you can sing out clearly. Then you bring your flute to its normal position and start on, let's say, a "D" in the staff. Just make sure you BLOW! You'll need a lot of air for this exercise. And support the air. You most likely won't get a sound out of your flute on the first try, but it is possible if you're doing everything right. Your voice will probably sound like a buzz or like you are humming. Make sure your voice isn't changing pitch while you play different notes....I know it's hard not to do that. xD

It's kind of strange....and if you sing play in front of others they'll be like, "What the heck is wrong with your sound?" But after you do it, it seriously clears the sound up. It doesn't last too long, but it definitely helps. I guess what it does is help to open your throat for a time.

I hope this helps! Just ask if you have another question. 3nodding

try rolling out a little bit. point your air stream down more so you can get as much air into the flute as possible. Make sure you're holding your flute properly too, so that way you can get a better tone. try humming when you play. if it helps, start humming and then bring your flute up to you. make sure you have to correct posture too. also, make sure your flute isnt soo much at an angle. It may help just to take a few lessons with a teacher.... I hope that helped. If you were here in this room with me, I could help you a little more by showing you what I am talking about...

I find that when my tone gets airy, it's from lack of practicing. This can be different for different people, obviously. Make sure you support. Your embochure should be more of "o" shape rather than "ooooo" or "eeeee". Support, of course, lots and lots of support. A technique that helps with support is laying down on your floor, or bed (as long as you're flat on your back, floor works best), place something decently heavy on your stomach, breath in (making sure your stomach is the only thing that goes out) and hold your breath for as long as your can, supporting the object with your diaphragm.

Not positive if that technique should be repeated or not...person that taught me it, never told me.

I've never actually done that Farferalloie. The next time I get my flute out I'll try it. But I guess someone wouldn't need to do it too many times, as long as they get the picture of what it's supposed to feel like. Support has always been a hard concept for me for some reason. It's just something that always is being drilled in me and now is starting to become more natural while I play.

Thanks you guys. I haven't checked back for a while -_-" I shall try it now and I hope it'll work =D

Try to open up your throat more and make sure your flute is horizontal so that your air stream will go right into it instead of at an angle. hope this helps! biggrin

Actually blowing into the flute at an angle can make your tone sound more... full? I'm not good with words, but blowing into it an angle makes it sound more pretty.
