Why do some people believe that they have magic powers and can change shape and all that jazz? (Note: I'm not talking about Wiccans. I'm talking about "Pagans"-note the quotes-the people who claim to worship "The Goddess" and have the power to change their shape and heal their wounds and all sorts of other nonsensical bullshit.)

How can anyone seriously believe that? "The Goddess gives me the power to turn into a bird!" "I saw an elf in the forest behind my house!" "There's a dragon living under my basement!" These people are spouting things that are obviously lies, but they believe them. And these are som eof the more benign claims I've heard. I was actually told that I had an aura so evil that I was obviously evil incarnate, that I had been sent to earth to destroy it, and that these three girls were going to kill me to keep me from destroying the world. And they believed every word of it! One of them told me that they even turned into a mouse to follow me home and watch me.

The question is: How/why do they believe this? It's insane.

I guess some people just weren't given enough attention as children... sadly, I'm lucky enough to know the kind of people you're talking about. One particular case, a long time ago, told me that she had sex with God. I, being the inquiring chap that I was, asked her to prove it, and all I got in return was sort of a bizarre stare (imagine a mixture of "Do I know you?" and "English, por favor" and you'll know the kind of stare I'm talking about). That was middle school, around the time I started figuring out that most of this religious stuff was complete bunk anyway.

Most of these people think that they believe this nonsense, but all it seems to boil down to is a bit of ego masturbation. I would ask them to prove their so-called "powers" to you. Ask them what reason you have to play along with their Peter Pan act. Of course, they won't be able to prove anything to you because it's complete and utter batshit.

Maybe they just a bunch of moldy bread during a game of D&D. Oh well. I guess we can all see elves in the forest if we really want to.

Not sure how or why but the main point is they do believe in it (unless they are just stupid panzies who play to much D n' D)... My wonder is where do we have the right to tell them not to believe in what they want to?

To half a** answer the original question... from what their stories, books, bibles, etc whatevers is something that leads them to believe such things just like christians think that Jesus will come back to save us all because "the bible tells us so"...

I've already made it clear that I think these people are idiots, but I thought I'd add more to my opinion.

I'm not sure if it's a lack of attention-in the case I described, the mother of one of the girls actually believed them, and was a member of the same bizarre "religion" as her kids.

@ AU-but do we let them continue to believe something that is complete and utter bullshit? What happens if one of these people is exceptionally stupid, and decides to prove that they can heal themselves by slitting their wrists? The people I know would actually do this. One of them almost did, until we reported her to the school shrink. I have no objection to people having their own beliefs, but when they become destructive, whether to themselves or to each other, it gets old.

And, finally, @ Semper-You know what I think? An angel whispered into his ear. The angel gave him the extra courage he needed to give her the divine retribution she deserved.

Ah yes ok I will agree on that when it becomes destructive to themselves and those around them then yes we should speak up... But for those who aslo think those things but only play around in "potion" making and whispering words into the air thinking they are casting "spells" let them think the way they want untill of course they start shrinking heads... Then you wana go into business with them....

But what about those who's "potions" are actually harmful to themselves? I'm not sure if they're just modern urban legends, but I've heard tell of kids who've made "potions", thinking they've got magic powers and have ended up killing themselves. Or, who've ended up dying when their "magic" has failed them. The thing question really becomes-where do you draw the line? Can we legitmately limit what people can believe? Do we have any right to moniter it in the first place?

No one has the right to choose what someone else believes, but in certain circumstances, beliefs must be regulated. Freedom of religion is guaranteed in the Constitution, but as soon as the consequences of a belief directly endanger someone else, we have to draw the line. Beliefs themselves aren't dangerous; responsibility ultimately rests with the people holding these beliefs. The weapon should never be blamed for the actions of the person behind it.

One of the best things we can do at the moment is to educate people and expose them to a variety of different beliefs, and hope that they can be independent-minded enough to resist being manipulated by beliefs like these. Of course, as long as human minds remain dependent, there will always be people who end up killing themselves because of their beliefs. That leads right into passive eugenics; the kids who mix the wrong potions don't get to pop out any more little chemists.

In a sarcastic frame of mind, welcome to America, where the President goes to war 'cause God told him to.

I'll post a more complete thought when I'm sober. Until then, yaaaaay porn!

...I think I know who you're talking about. Sadly enough these people don't actually follow any of these religions that you pointed out, because when they say things like "You don't believe I can do that because you don't believe in Wicca!" they anger the people who do.

Also, there's a big difference between having a faith, and believing in things that cannot possibly be true. neutral

Dude, you cannot change shape. Oh, you can try. You can close your eyes and concentrate really, really hard, but nothing is gonna happen.

rofl Oh, religion. When one person believes it, they're delusional. When a bunch of people believe it, it's magically real.

One of the reasons could possibly be that they're using drugs, or just plain bored with a messed-up life. Or not; I don't know.

But my grampa uses marijuana, and he once tried to tell me that a push is just another form of a pull.
