I see there's only posts about KDE and Gnome here.

Any fans of XFCE? Fluxbox? Something other than the big 2?

It looks like your the first, or at least the first person brave enough to say something about XFCE and Fluxbox.

It's a shame. XFCE is fairly robust and uses very little system resources.

Fluxbox is WAY minimal, any very customizable.

Yea I know, I personally think that they would be best for servers if you opt to have some sort of GUI with it that way you save most your resources. I don't know about using it for Desktops though....

I use XFCE primarily on my Gentoo machine. It's fantastic! I find KDE too bulky and Gnome a bit too much for my needs.

he he I think that is great that you dont use KDE but I got use to KDE and that is the problem I love konqueror and kopete and Kaffeine and probably some other KDE programs but I dont remeber them.

But I would like to try some other Desktop enviroment. So yea I will probably whan I will buy my new PC and I will have this one for testing stuff on it.

I tired GNOME and it just wasn't for me, I find KDE fits my needs.

I stick to GNOME usually but when I was on my laptop Xfce was my fav. It was lighter than Gnome or KDE but was still a full GUI unlike many minimalist GUI's out it has all the goodies that I needed.

I actually use Rox with Compiz. I did use Fluxbox and had a look at Gnome and Kde but I found them too bloated, they gave me lots of things I never used, and really had no intention of using.

Rox Desktop - Is a slimmed down file manager, less like MS more like Mac, with a panel and pinboard if you want them, you can also get installable plugins for it, though there aren't many.

Compiz - I'm sure you all know Compiz or Beryl and use it trough Kde or Gnome, you can use it with other WMs but it isn't as well integrated. It makes my widows look and feel pretty and 3D.

I keep threatening to change my system from Gnome (which I do enjoy a lot) to something closer to WindowMaker or a bit more "classic" of them, they have a very interesting look and feel that is different, different can be good.

I played around with Flux on my Knopix live CD and JWM on Damn Small Linux on my thumb drive and I have to say I like them both. They both are fast and offer small learning curves (Flux everything is accessed through context menus, and JWM has an menu with a menu button.)

My favorite, for the moment, is XFCE. Lightweight, fast, and full of useful features. Gnome and KDE just got too bloated for me... Rolled entirely too much into one package...

I guess I'm in a minority then. I'm using Sawfish (those who remember gnome 1.X, should remember it).
No panel, apps started by entering commands from a small pop-up window (self-written). Well, okay, i do have a panel (perlpanel), but just for clock, network monitor, taskbar and stuff like that. No "launchers". No system tray - i've got 12 workspaces so i don't need it. And it's hidden by default.
So in the end it's just an empty background biggrin (yes, no desktop icons either)

edit: by the way, once i have more time i hope to post some of the self-written tools i'm using in the net, so anybody can have that extremely-lightweight keyboard-driven X experience wink

I'm running XFCE for my DE and openbox for my WM, Probably my favorites. Gnome and KDE are bloated.
