I believe to some extent it was assential for countries to expand their borders for one reason or another after the Industrial Revolution... but do you agree with how they did it? If not, what other methods could they have used?
Discuss - -Sepoy Rebellion -Rwanda -Protectorates/collonies/spheres of influence -Missionaries
Those are just some of the things I can think of off the top of my head... I may edit and add more later.

Imperialism was one of Europe's less proud periods. It left an impact on the world, especially patchwork Africa. Social Darwinism was huge, and it has turned into no-holds-barred racism. It was necessary for all of our modern conveniences to come along; and for the shaping of today's nations. Also, Mahatma Gandhi would never have taken such a stand if it weren't for the whole "Jewel of the Crown" affair.
Trades were made, alliances were forged, and a lot of modern concepts started with Imperialism. It was negative in a lot of ways, but it shaped a third of the world.

We could have got here in a better way, I think, but we also have the benefit of hindsight. I think it was a disgusting period of our history that led to us jumping into technologies before we understood them.
Why would we do that? War, of course! Our technological developments underwent huge leaps during the First and Second World Wars. The problem, of course, is that war doesn't allow you to think of the effects on the ecosystem, atmosphere, etc. It's either use it or lose it. Now, of course, we can look back at what they did and shake our heads. Too late, though, maybe.

I could think of things of higher importance than them expanding their borders...

What I'm about to say can apply to anything.
Violence is seemingly the easiest, fastest and most effective way to get what you want. But, it's definitely not the best. As long as the person/people are determined enough, they could eventually strike a compromise with the other side. Solving problems through violence is like putting a band aid on a gun shot wound.
Basically, violence will seemingly fix the problem for a short time, then it'll just come back again, only worse.
So do I think they could have gone about it better? Of course I do.
