Ballad of Peace

He slept in peaceful solitude
A lifetime on the run
Now drawing toward the last rain fall
True peace at last was won

He had been chased, and beaten down
Scorned, battered and cursed
Yet now, he’d found a way to flee
Away from pain and thirst

Forgiven, enemies still lived
Remembered grudge forsworn
For now, he had his lover there
And child yet unborn

At peace, they lay together where,
After the years of strife,
They cuddled far from vision there:
The warrior, and wife.

Yet some could not allow them rest
For one chose to defy
Sneaking into his home by night
She saw the couple lie

She struck with bitter vengeance deep
Then left him to his pain
No harm upon his own body
His wife beside him slain

The dragon went to rise again
But found he couldn’t fly
While seeing her torn open there
So, on her bones, he’ll cry.

Why must you always steal away
The peace that others find?
Why can’t you let the peaceful rest
With their soft frame of mind?

Now hatred fills the dragon’s heart
But wisdom comes as well
He does not seek revenge to start
But stays within his hell

And so perhaps the day will come
When peace will come again
But this I know for certainty:
Not from the race of men.
