Since when did elitism become a bad thing? I thought it was the basis for this guild. We realize that we fall into the category that people label "elitist" because we think that a certain percentage of intelligent Gaians are better than the idiot masses. Why are there flame wars in the guild about how we deny elitism, when we really don't?
I mean, wouldn't it be a better policy to simply say, "Yeah, we're elitist. Don't like it, leave." and it they continue to raise trouble, just ban them?
Thoughts?

Elitism isn't a good thing...
It's a very very bad thing.
The basis of this guild is to weed out noobish... not be better than everyone else.

Let me give you the defition of it: Elitism is the belief or attitude that those individuals who are considered members of the elite are better than other groups.
This is a very bad state of mind, Bunny.

We're putting the "elite" non-noobs and putting them forward as an example of what Gaians should be.
Honestly, I've never seen "elistism" as a bad thing. Society does it every day with celebrities, politicians, and the wealthy. On Gaia, it seems to have this negative connotation simply because the majority of the forum goers seem to be socialists or something.

Yeah, but it's difficult to deny that we are. So... can you think of any better defense other than "Nu-uh. -banned-"?
Because that might not be the best thing for our public image... sweatdrop

Just as other ways of life can be described in different ways, elitism can as well.
Take preps for example. The stereotype prep is rich, is a kiss a** to anyone who holds authority, and thinks they're better than everyone else. However, normal preps just wear the same clothes and hang out together. I know this.
Emo is another good example. Your stereotype emo is the one who is always suicidal and cuts themselves. That's the most rare form of Emo. I am Emo, but that's not what it is. Look up Emo (Slang) in Wikipedia and you will see that Emo is being open about your emotions/honest and outgoing.
As far as elitism, we fall close to these two particular things. The stereotype elitist thinks they're better than everyone else, doesn't make errors, and criticise those who aren't as good as them. We aren't the stereotype elitists. We are elitists; but in a sense of knowing that everyone that has regards for the rules is better than the noob/poll trolls that lurk the GD daily.
So in a sense, we are elitists; but not the stereotype people make us out to be.
(Note: Any information I post can be used for any part of the guild so long as it is informal.)

I think that post just about cleared up this discussion.
No matter which way you sway your words, we are elitist, just elitist of another caliber.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I always thought that we are, in fact, not elitist.
Why, you ask?
Most guilds are not made based on elitism, but based on interest. The common interest of this Guild is literacy and being noob-free. If we were elitist, we would support the fact that we are better than noobs and that noobs are not allowed in this Guild becuase we are better than them. But instead, we do not allow noobs in this Guild becuase they are bothersome and we wanted to create a relaxing atmosphere in order to create a relaxing haven.
And yes, elitism is a very bad thing. The Holocaust happened becuase Hitler looked down upon the Jews, homosexuals, Gypsies, and disabled people and thought that Germans were elite, and people listened to him.
I do not join elitist Guilds. I did not see anything elitist about this Guild, hence joined.
