I started to read a discussion going on in the ED forums and thought it would be good to bring it here. Here is the original link: http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=27576467&page=1What is your opinion on this topic? What do you think is fat? Thin? Normal? Are you happy the way you are? I think I made an interesting point on the thread, here is what I wrote: I believe the "thin is in" style came around because of Twiggy. -Marilyn Monroe wore a size 16 dress. -What used to be a size 16 is now a size 12. -Size 12 now days is considered to be large. -Many would say if you wore a size 12 you are chubby or fat. Marilyn Monroe was considered to be the most beautiful woman on the planet. What do you think is beautiful?

I swing both ways, but my preferences for women and men vary greatly. I like women with a little bit of fat on them; I don't mean unhealthy, but I'm MUCH more attracted to a Marylin Monroe type (real women have curves!) than the Kate Moss type (she looks like she'd...I don't know. Collapse.)
With guys, though, I tend to like a skinnier guy. I'm not sure why that is but my tastes sort of reverse with gender.
Not matter what the gender, though, they need to at least LOOK healthy. Seriously, when someone's bulging at the seams or their clothes just hang off of them it just looks weird.

I also like people to look "healthy". I'm a straight woman, however, not even I like to look at these twigish girls that run around my sisters' highschool. I wouldn't want my sisters to look like that, it's just not good for you. Also, I like my men nice and meaty. I don't want a man that doesn't look like he could hack his way out of a wet paper bag. Not really someone who is "heavy", just built. I believe that I'm too heavy myself, but several of the people I work with like my "roundness". I guess I just feel that there is such thing as too little and too big.

Well, I have ED-NOS, so my opinion here is going to a little skewed, but I like my women (and my men) bony. Maybe it's because that's what I aspire to look like myself, but I adore the sight of chest bones (visible ribs in the upper chest), ribs, and vertebrae. Admittedly, I don't want someone I could crush by accident while hugging them, but I find bones, any bones, incredibly attractive.
Don't get me wrong, I definitely don't think anyone should be unhealthily thin on purpose, especially if they develop an eating disorder, and I do find some curvy women and some well-muscled men attractive. You must understand, though, that to me thinness represents self-control and inner beauty--perfection if you will.

OK.....Bust: 36" Waist: 24" Hips: 38"
I'm well toned, NOT a bodybuilder.... I wear a size 8-10 in pants. I've found that jeans tend to run in much smaller sizes than any other kind of pants. This scares me because I think girls who wear a size 9 in anything but jeans think that they should be able to stuff themselves into size nine jeans..... I'm bisexual....but with the way the girls at my old college dressed....I'm surprised I'm not 100% straight. I think that curvy women are hot, but only if they wear clothing that fits them. Some girls think that if they wear smaller sizes they'll look smaller. Well they don't, they look bigger. If you want ot look smaller, wear something that actually fits.

Being in shape is attractive to me. If I were a man, I would be attracted to a woman who isn't skinny as a rail, but who also isn't lazy. I would want a woman who takes care of her body. The same as I am with men; as a woman, I'm attracted to men that are in shape and that spend time keeping themselves healthy.
That's the same ideal I have for myself. Almost my entire life, I have been ridiculously self concious. As a preteen, I packed on some extra pounds, which were extremely difficult to work off. Now that I've probably finished growing, loosing it has been easier, and I am at my ideal size. I'm healthy, and I'm very happy with my appearance. I'm smaller than I ever have been, in a size small/extra small in tops and a 2 in jeans. I am 5'7" and about 129 pounds. My genes come from a long line of very tall, very thin people. I feel good, and I feel much more confident in my own skin.

How do you do it? I'm 5'7", 115lbs and a size 5/6 in jeans...
I like my figure though. Most of my weight goes into my chest and hips. I'm in a skinny stage now. I'm sure that given a couple years time I will be back to a size 9/10. To be honest though, I am happy no matter what my weight/size is. I am me and if people can't see the beauty in me whether or not I have the perfect figure then they can go screw themselves.
The perfect female figure to me is medium bust, smaller waist and bigger hips. Along the lines of an hourglass figure. The main thing that's important when looking at weight is whether or not the person is proportioned right. I have friends that would be considered on the weightier side, but it works for them. They are some of the most georgeous women that I know. I can't stand the ideal of having extremely tall/stick thin women. Then again, I am very big into figure drawing and it's just not pleasing to draw a woman who is all sharp angles and bones.
As for the ideal look in a man, they have to have the 'V'. There are two major v's on a man's body that are important. There's the 'V' that's created by broad shoulders into narrow hips and the 'V' that is created from the hips to the groin. Once again, as an artist it's the repetition of shapes and line that pleases me. I prefer a guy that has a little muscle mass to him, but also has a little meat on their bones. I have to feel safe when they're holding me. Larger hands also helps.
No matter what though, it's all about proportioning and how the weight settles on the body. Some people look great as stick bugs. I wouldn't. I would just look gaunt and underfed.

Personally....I am repulsed by fat for some odd reason. Well, actually it's not a huge mystery, seeing that I come from a family where no one's eating habits could be classified as "normal", and that I am a runner(also formally a dancer...in case you didn't know already, in both a slender figure is highly coveted, making it no surprise so many participants develop eating disorders.)
So, with a background like that, it's obvious I'm going to be heavily biased. I couldn't ever look like Marilyn Monroe, and I wouldn't want to either. However, it’s not like I think just because it’s not in my tastes she’d be unhappy over it.
Even if in my eyes fat certainly equals unattractive, I know esome people might be just as grossed out by my athletic figure as I am by an overweight individual’s. So I just say let everyone be, and if they perceive themselves to be attractive at a higher weight…well, I’m not going to try and become the Ugly Police or anything. (makes me thinner by comparison too! blaugh )

If a person is overweight, I would consider them fat. I love curvy women, though not in a sexual way. I, personally prefer the Marilyn Monroe types opposed to the Twiggy types. I'm a size 12 and I don't think I am fat at all. Sure there are some days where I wish I had a little less fat but everyone has days when they criticise themselves.
You say the thin look came in because of Twiggy, though, what about the whafe like flappers of the 1920's, they were before Marilyn Monroe and were extremely thin. x

@ Little Mongoose: You're lucky. You were blessed with an actual chest. I'm very small in the chest area, at least compared to other members of my family.
I agree with you on your description of an ideal man. The 'V' is important to me as well. And the big hands.

I'm just 'right in the middle'. I don't really like the fact that many people think that you have to be so 'thin' to be beautiful.... I mean, I've seen many girls who are (in a non-lesbian way) drop-dead gorgeous and over 150 lbs.

In reference to the pictures above, I think they both have qualities that are beautiful and not-so-beautiful. I don't have "curves", but I can't help it. I am naturally thin and I like it that way. I don't show off my body, anyway. I get concerned when people are not healthy, and I don't think that being unhealthy (either too thin or too skinny) is attractive. I don't like big muscles, nor do I like ribs.
The thing is, I think people should accept others for who they are and instead of trying to point out the bad aspects of a person, point out the good. If you think someone is unhealthy, maybe you should approach them in a sincerely concerned manner.
I've always wondered about models now-a-days. I mean, people say they like big boobs, but the models are way too skinny to even need a bra. What's up with that?

Ah ha! That was such a great topic. *jumps to action* Ok!
First of all, my opinion of beauty. I think the typical interpretation is highly over rated. In my opinion, the most beautiful/striking/good looking/whatever you want to call them people, are the ones that have an imperfection of some sort. One that not only makes you distinctly remember them, but doesn't lower you're opinion of them. *Example: You see someone who in your opinion is beautiful/striking. Soon you notice that they have a large forehead, or sharp nose, etc. yet despite this fact, you still think they're beautiful.*
That to me is true beauty. I never liked the idea of perfect individuals anyways... I can not stand absolute perfection in any form. sweatdrop *Sorry, but that's just me*
As for those images? I have to disagree. I personally DO NOT think Marilyn Monroe is/was one of the most beautiful people on the planet. In fact, I've never viewed her to be beautiful. Am I saying she's ugly? No, she's far from i;. But, in my opinion, she isn't beautiful. I think there are many other women in general who are/were far better looking then her.
As for th second image? In my opinion, that's too skinny. But hey, everyone has different ideals and opinions, so what I see as skinny, someone else may see as the perfect size. *So don't flame me for my opinion.*

Guys preech about how they like em big *not all guys, but most* and yet, all these famous models have barely any chests confused

I don't think those stick thin girls are very attractive, but I find bones attractive. I consider myself "heavy", but I have narrow shoulders and I love that my clavicle and shoulder bones show. In girls, if you are way too thin, it doesnt look very good, but neither does being very big. Im not attracted to girls, so yes, it takes a very pretty girl for me to actually think of them as really pretty. As for guys, it really just depends on the guy. I definately don't like overly muscular guys, but some guys look good with muscles and looking just guyish, while some are very attractive being very thin, just not the kind that look like skinny little boys.
