Psychosele: March of the Imperium
CHAPTER III

In a time from long before we can remember, the planet was settled. A vast nation spread itself across the stars, and thus Remus was founded. But then, the Age of Darkness came. The world was once covered with colonists, all serving together joyously, but they all lost connection with each other. The colonies fell into ruin, and few survived the following disaster. The vast nation of the stars abandoned the planet, in order to fight the great enemy, and that enemy sent vanguard troops to the planet, destroying many of the peaceful colonies before being repulsed. The great enemy was never seen again, but the colonies lost all contact with each other, and over the centuries, empires were built, and other came into ruin.

But now is the Age of Expansion, as the Venerable Imperiator has commanded his armies to venture to the Wastes and conquer them in His name. His lands reign from the Great Sea in the South and East to the Ematian Mountains in the West. Those are set and defined limits, but to the North, is another story. A series of forts were constructed along the northern border, as that any settlements were left ghost towns, and scout parties never return. The Imperium is composed mainly of wastes and deserts, but to this northern land, there is life; vast forests and fields and meadows cover it, making a much better land for acquiring food.

Therein lies the problem however, you can't just march up there and take the lands and use them as your own; That is why these series of fortifications were constructed. The Menace. That is all that they are known by, as that is all they are, a menace, a nightmare really. Any encounter disturbs even the resolute Imperial soldiers. And encounters have escalated. It seems that they are pushing for war, so the Imperiator has decided, why don't we push back....

In the opening battles of the war, things looked grim, and in the battle for Namus Rock a key victory was won for the Imperium. Vital supply lines to the front were saved from being overrun, but at the cost of thousands of lives cut down in a bloody swathe. The most Venerable Imperiator’s forces redoubled their efforts at this point and began to stage many defensive victories. An offensive was soon to be had.

However, before they were able to commit enough troops to the frontlines, a rebellion erupted near the Emation Mountains in a small city. The people had rejected their god, and they had betrayed their government. If it was not enough for them to simply rebel, they had to do it at a period that the Imperium was weak, adding insult to injury. They could not let this transgression go unpunished, and within a few days the rebellion was quelled. The Imperium could once more take focus to the North.

(Okay, it decided to shrink it for me...b*****d. That dark spot over where the river forks is the capital. I think the rest you can pretty much gather, other than city names and such.)

The lands are mostly wastes. A single river, the Tigris runs through the Imperiums lands, and breaths the very life into it. To the West lays the Ematian Mountains, and in the South and East lays the Great Sea. And, to the North, lays vast forests.

The Wastes are desolate, infertile, and for the most part, uninhabitable. The soil is a tough, dry, brownish-red dirt, thinner than clay but thicker than sand. It somehow manages to have the worst qualities of both. Every so often, perhaps one every square mile, is a dead tree, as if it had been dead for centuries. Brittle, tough plants, likely inedible, dot the ground every so often, made of a dark brown, almost green, color. During the day, the light is dull, and a hot, dry air bellows across the land, blowing sand anywhere, and everywhere; and during night, it is cool and winds often subside, but it becomes near pitch black, requiring night vision equipment for basic guard duty.

Along the River however, life is good, and this is why most of the cities are built upon it. The ground is fertile and soft, and grass grows upon it for a few miles out. Twisted, gnarled trees speckle the area, their leaves blowing in cool, soft winds. Most of the populous however, never really gets to see much of this area. And the same with the Usad plains. The area is nice, serine, but most of it is set aside for farming. However, as that it is so dark in day or night, the beauty of the place has almost an eerie feel to it, seeming only a slight bit brighter than dusk all day.

The Coasts are similar to the River, and almost as populated. Grass and plants grow to about a mile inland, but are all gnarled and shaped to odd directions because of heavy winds. The waters are always a dark blue, yet almost grey, adding to the dismal feel felt anywhere else in the known world. Waves are often docile, but will on occasion reach heights of over a hundred feet, keeping people from sporadically building along the coast.

Most Cities are monoliths of steel, shooting up into the sky and expanding off into the distance. However, usually the rich literally live upon the poor. The rich, who can afford better housing, will buy penthouses high up in buildings, and as you go down these buildings, the people tend to get poorer, and at the bottom, there is poverty, starvation, and violence. Police forces seldom go down there. And as nice and clean as the upper levels are, the lower are grimy and dirty.

Smaller Towns and Villages are often made of stone and metals, though not as professionally made. The streets are merely packed dirt, but the people seem to have well enough lives. Most are loyal to the Imperium, but seeing as many of these do not have regular contact with large cities or fortifications, they will often become partisan, raider, or otherwise malignant settlements.

To the North is an area like no other in the known world, and for good reason. As you travel further north, first off, it gets brighter, not by much, but a noticeable difference. Also, there are forests, and much fertile land, and much of it is just left fallow! However, not much is known of these lands, and for good reason, the Menace.

THE CHAPTER BEGINS...

With the rebellion in the East quelled, the focus of the Imperiator turned back to the North, the full might of his armies ready to march. Reports from scouts have been scattered at best, should scouts ever return from their duties. The soldiers who marched northward were almost taken aback by the setting. There was grass on the ground, plants grew from the soil, and trees dotted the landscape. As they went further north, the trees became more plentiful, and in some areas there were even forests, something almost magical to the soldiers. The most startling difference to them was not the plants, as that they have seen plants before; it was the light. In the lands that they are from, in the brightest part of the day, it would appear as naught but dusk. The mild amounts of light would at times almost blind them, or impair them at the least.

The Imperial Fourth Legion, the Wolves, was sent along the coastline, roughly ten miles in, on a warpath into Menace territory. They entered what they believed to be a forest, and paying more attention to it than their environment, they soon came to find that the ground became more and more moist, turning into a peat bog and then a swamp. The canopy grew thicker and it became the dark the soldiers were used to once more, barring beams of light shining through the leaves. The trees became too dense and the ground so soft that many vehicles had trouble getting through, and many more abandoned.

Two days into Menace territory, the Fourth Legion was becoming uneasy. Strange sounds radiated throughout the swamp at some times, and at others it was eerily silent. The water at times came up to their waists, and if they were attacked, then certainly they’d be at a disadvantage. Once could only hope that the Menace would not ambush them there.

In the name of the Imperiator the soldiers do pray.

Having been sent along for the ride with the Wolves after his last couple missions being "Successful," Landry marched along the dampening grounds. Where they were from, they were lucky to see the damned river near the capital. Now, they were wading through it almost daily. He wondered just how the Menace were able to do it.

After hitting the damp, gushy road, they had to leave many vehicles behind, most of which would almost ensure victory, or at least a better turnout than if they hadn't brought them along...He now saw the flaws within their own research, development, and overall use back in their territory. He would have to suggest something about this to the scientists back at Capital...given he made it back alive.

He turned to the soldier next to him...he seemed familiar to him, as he had probably served on a mission with him before...He spoke to him...

Guess its time to be on the offense huh?

((Kyle- er...Zach, that means you!))

The soldier turned his head and gave a nod, "It's 'bout time, too." He looked down for a second thinking and then looked back soon after, "I think I know you from somewhere, old sport. Where 'ave ya been recently?"

Landry smiled and looked forward towards where they were going before responding...

You know? I was just thinking the same thing...I was in the Menace invasion and then later in the rebellion. I was lucky to be sent here so quickly. Just goes to show how great our machines are.

Kyle nodded, "Ain't it the truth, my brother? I will have to admit though that the Menace are proving to me more and more formidable during every encounter." Kyle cleared his throat lightly and shifted his weight, " I seriously thought they were going to overrun Namus Rock for about an hour of the fighting. But we had heros; those of which aren't with us anymore." He bowed his head slightly at the mention of their fallen friends.

David was in the third wave of vehicles to travel to the swamplands. Just like the others before them, they had to stop and abandon their jeeps for the time being. Due to David's lack in height, he was holding his gun at shoulder level to avoid getting it wet. He could hear some laughter and knew it was towards him. He ignored it for now as he trudged through mid-torso high water. The sounds heard were foreign to him as different wildlife made their different barkings, chirpings, and other sounds. The real surprise to David, was not only the wildlife growing around but the bright light from something other than an electircal bulb. It was like an oversized fire in the sky ligthing up the entire plains. Now the jungle canopy hid the floating orb and small trickles of its rays penetrated through. But the glum look was definitely familiar to the Imperium soldiers.

David was straight out of boot camp when he was put within the fourth legion. And he was definitely nervous now. He wanted so badly to be in the fight against the menace...and now here he was in completely foreign land. His only solace was the fact that other soldiers surrounded him. Which meant he wouldn't be the first one attacked. He took deep breaths as the weight of his drenched clothing started to take a small toll. His first month of boot camp had conditioned him for many different things, but nothing prepared anyone for the sights they were witnessing today.

Landry clasped his shoulder, in understanding and comfort.

We must get rid of the Menace if they were not to die in vain...Let's focus on the here and now.

Kyle nodded and clasped Landry's shoulder to acknowledge his action. He then said confidently, "For only now can we achieve that fate!" The vechile they were in hit a bump and Kyle jerked and he steadied himself, "It's a different environment out here...but it's still the same Imperium roads."

Landry looked over and nodded.

You got that right. If you can adapt easily you can fight anywhere. I don't care if these lands were oceans. If we had to fight in clear blue water, murky swampland, or deteriorating forest, I would gladly do so for the Imperium.

Kyle grunted in approval. But then his head snapped up and he stopped dead in his tracks. He looked above in the canopies of the trees. He whispered, "Did...you hear that?" Kyle breifly brought his head back down to see if any others heard it. He was calmed to know that he wasn't crazy as he saw others looking up and slowing their pace but that calm soon left him when he realized that that meant it was the enemy. Kyle slowly took his hand off the grip of his rifle. He found the handle he was looking for and pulled it slowly until he heard a click. He then released it and a loud noise of metal on metal was made but a round was now in the chamber. Rustling was heard from above as the metal echoed from Kyle's gun. He whispered, "Well, my friend, I hope you've adapted to the swamp quickly..."

Landry looked up when he heard the noise also. He lifted his rifle to his eye, looking up at and around the treetops, scanning for any movement...The rustling was heard another time, and he moved his rifle to that direction, then a gurgled scream as one of the Imperium soldiers was stabbed from behind. The rest heard it and looked towards him, not seeing the menace, as he left just before the first eyes met the dying soldier. Landry looked around, trying to see where he had went. He moved back to see who the soldier was, and a whole squad of menace hopped down from the canopy...

-------------------------------
(Menace POV)

The menace moved from treetop to treetop, watching as the enemy moved below. He hit a loose branch and the leaves rustled. He saw as the whole group looked up at where he had been seconds before, and leapt over to the next sturdy branch. He moved away from his area in a circle, then hitting another weak branch, and causing them to look there. He went back around and to the outskirts, hopping down silently and taking out his blade. He moved forward and to one of the more mobile soldiers, probably one of the newer recruits. The menace squad he was with was waiting for his first strike, and this was his initiation to be in the menace army.

He brought the blade up to neck height on the soldier standing in front of him. He pulled back on the sword and thrust with all his might into the neck of the soldier. He pulled it out and ran into the trees after the soldier gave a gurgling scream. He hid behind a tree a few yards away, waiting for his squad to make their entrance.

David was a little slow to react as the swamp was higher on him than the other soldiers. He had just aimed his rifle in the direction of the rustling when the gurgling noise was heard. He then turned, a little after the rest, towards the fallen soldier. David was breathing heavily now and, though the rest of him seemed to be shaking, his hand, and thus his gun, was still steady. He started to scan through the tree tops. The fear of the new environment taking over again. The vegetation was a new sight and now David knew that they hid many dangers. The Menace were hiding in them and it was difficult for anyone to get a clear visual.

David began to trudge forward slowly, twisting his body from left to right as he moved each leg through the thick bog. Another rustle was heard from the ground level in some nearby bushes. David turned towards them more frantic because it was closer now. His gun was aimed at the accused bush. "Hey guys," he called out in a loud whisper. He then moved his gun forward less than an inch to point at the noise making bush.
