Simply, do you believe in Fate, in any sense?
I wanna see where this goes a bit before jumping in myself, as not to start it right off with a blatant discussion, or to influence (in either way) others. ^__^

Well, on one hand if one's destiny was already decided some believe that there would be a lack of fascinating turns one's life could make. I disagree. We may know that our fates are predetermined but that doesn't mean that they won't be interesting. Most people I talk to about fate are always whining about the lack of fun. Hence, why I bring it up. So, in short, I believe in predetermined fate, why not? It almost gives me a sense of clairvoyance.

I do not believe in any sort of predetermined destiny, nor do I wish to. I think people should learn to take responsibility for their actions and think about the consequences of things before they do them.
It just seems to me that it helps people to accept the things that happen if they think that it couldn't have been changed or avoided. I can accept that whatever happens to me came about because of the actions of myself or others and not because it was just "meant to happen"

I could easily insert the "mental crutch" speech I gave in the religion forum, but I won't. I'll summarize it! I believe in fate because it makes the hard things in life easier to deal with, you're right. It's a comfort to know that everything happens for a reason.

In my religion Fate is actually a God. We give tribute to her in hopes that she will send us good fortune, like getting a better job and things like that. Fate does not control every aspect of our lives, she mearly manipulates the large events in order to maintain a specific end. So, yes we have free will to choose the way our life will go, but there are certain things which are out of our hands.

As a aChild of Fate, I believe that the universe is governed by three opposing (not conflicting) forces: fate, and then the two minor forces of Choice and Chance. One can follow the plan, but since Fate is not a completely flawless being, She requires at times other flawless beings to make decisions, and to balance that out even more, there has to be some things that are thoughtless in nature. I believe that while yes, the end results of all important things (some things do not always seem important at the time or to us) are predetermined, but it is up to choice and chance how we get to those important results. ^__^

I'm in the middle. I'm the type of person who does believe in fate, but, I also believe that we have the ability to change our fate. *If that makes any sense* More simply put, I believe that our lives are planned ahead by a higher power, BUT they're not set in concrete. Meaning there's many different paths/options laid before us that we can take, so in return we just choose the ones we want, and then see where that leads us/ what options that choice leads us to, and so on and so forth.
Before I babble on, I'll stop myself, b/c I don't think this is making much sense. If I was able to discuss this in person, it would make a lot more sense sweatdrop

My philosophy on life is to regret nothing. Everything that has happened to you in your life has worked to change you. Every choice that you make and it's consequences have shaped you into the person that you are today. If you regret your past, you are regretting who you are. I have no patience for regret and the notion in and of itself is the antithesis of everything that I hold true.
This relates to the idea of fate in the fact that I think fate is self-made. Every decision that you make and everything that happens to you helps you to create where you want to be in your life. Your choices have more than one outcome and all of them are self-fulfilling. The trick is to find out what choices will lead to the fate that you envosion for youself.

I think our life has a vague outline of what is supposed to happen in it, and that we color in the details. Like, what's going to happen is going to happen, but it's up to us to decide on what and whose terms, and it's also up to us to decide how pleasant the ride will be.

It depends on what you mean by "Fate". Some people I know think of fate as the logical order of things. Ex: Kerry has sex with John, who is HIV postive. It was fate that Kerry was HIV positive after that night. If it's that kind of fate, then yes, I do belive in fate. But if it's the kind of fate that I think most of the people on this thread are talking about (the predestination kinda fate) then no! That's as good as saying humans are robots or computer programs, only able to do what's programmed or predestined for them. It gives life no meaning at all. Also, think about all the horrible people in the world; ex: in my area recently, a lady hung all of her children. If I belived in Fate, then I would have to conclude that she's completely innocent and shouldn't be punished because "Fate" drove her to commit that atrocious act. Sorry, I get pretty heated on this subject. sweatdrop

The jury is still out in my book on that. Yes I have a book on it. It's called my journal. It's kind of like a book to myself.
