I am not a Satanist. I am a Wiccan.
I would like to know what I need to avoid when I portray a group of satanists in my novel. I also need to know what I can/should show in it.
What I have so far is that the Desert Flame Satanists (if anyone has a better name that I can use let me know) is a group of Satanists who are one of the strongest magical groups in town. They are tolerant of the other groups (as long as they stay out of their way) and they will help other groups (for the soul purpose of keeping the metaphorical devil they know in power). They belive in a duel set of gods and have a lot of powerful magic. They work in a desert and keep tabs on all the magical stuff going on in town.
I do want to know specifically about the magical practice of Satanists. I say that right before going to the subforum and reading it.
Any help?

Any practical Satanist that has an IQ over 30 does NOT: encourage the act of or participate in illigal activities.
sacrifice small children/animals etcetera.
worship Satan. Although some do, the majority do not.
Those are the obvious don'ts. There are loads more, but as long as you stay away from all those, you'll be ok. You should include that Satanists are normal, everyday people just like everyone else. Nine times out of 10, you won't realize someone you know very well is a Satanist unless you ask them. Our religion is not something we flaunt. Satanism101.com is a site you might want to look over. It's also in the link list. As for magic, aside from from the links we have in the Guild, you're better off asking PirateEire. I practice Traditional Witchcraft and thats the extent of my magical knowledge. She's more skilled in that department than I am. I am actually thinking of buying a Satanic Magic for Dummies! book. sweatdrop

I'd be glad to help you out if you could tell me more about the story.
But things to avoid would be things such as ritual sacrifice, orgys, basically anything that comes from movies or Christian propaganda.
Also, are there other groups in this book? If so what are they like?

I have some more information about the satanists now. (the story is in my sig if anyone cares).
There are three other major magical groups in the area, a coven of witches (the Desert Coven) who speicalize in combative chi magic. They wander the desert that the Satanists practice in. There is a group of wiccans in town who stay away from everyone else. There is also a group of druids and they stay away from everyone. The Satanists know about all the groups.
The Desert Coven for the most part stays out of the Satanists's way. Becuase they specialize in comabtive chi magic (yeah, in the story there is storybook spells and such and chi has a lot more power) the Satanists tend to stay away from them just because they don't crap if they don't have to.
These Satanists don't hide who they are but they don't brag about it either. I arranged the coven like a Wiccan one with an elder, a high priest and priestess, some keepers of the watchtowers, etc. The leader is kind of parnaoid and caries around an enchanted sword. (to be fair, the desert is full of primative demons that will attack people).
Right now in the story the Satanists are going to back up the Desert Coven because a demon attacked the leader of the Desert Coven. They're working together but kind of because there is no other option. They are going to have to fight demons with some chi energy and a few evokation magic (what kind of a thing might they evoke? The desert coven uses egregores and elementals to fight).
I am doing my best to portray the Satanists as more bad assed versions of Wiccans. They don't take crap, they use all their skills and they take care of the magical comunity as long as it suits them all the while not flaunting their religion. They do have morals but at the same time they don't play games, they do what they have to do no matter what anyone says.
Sorry that was long winded but I want to make sure I do this thing right. Wow, I hope I don't make this group sound all sterotypical gothic....

P.s. (a sense of humor, perhaps slightly dry, would not be out of place)

Khandnalie i want to read this when your done.... I will post the chapters tonight or tomorrow with the Satanists in them. ( Link) then you can see what I have so far. I still don't know where the book is going and until I do the role of the Satanists is up in the air but for the most part they will be allies with the MC's group. EDIT: Well, I just posted the part with the Satanists in it. But unless you read the entire story (which is HUGE) it won't make sense what is going on.

Seserous I am not a Satanist. I am a Wiccan. You're a priest of Gardner's fertility cult? Spectacular. What coven do you belong to? Seserous I would like to know what I need to avoid when I portray a group of satanists in my novel. I also need to know what I can/should show in it. What kind of novel is this? Seserous What I have so far is that the Desert Flame Satanists (if anyone has a better name that I can use let me know) is a group of Satanists who are one of the strongest magical groups in town. Firstly, you need to realize that atheistic Satanism is the largest and by far most popular form of Satanism, not including the pseudo-Satanic bunk that's portrayed in the media. Obviously, your book has something to do with theistic Satanists, of which there are many variations. I mean, you could select from organizations like the First Church of Satan, the Black Goat Cabal, the Church of Azazel, Ordo Flammeus Serpens, etc. Be careful about how you portray actual religions in a fictional novel. Honestly, you may want to stick with inventing religions that are parallel to your ideas on what Wicca and Satanism are, to avoid the spreading of more misinformation about either religion. Even if your portrayal is positive, it could have negative effects... like a Ravenwolf novel on Wicca. Also: ...why the necrobump?
