I noticed that, whenever Buffy tells someone she loves them, they, or someone else, is soon to die. Three examples:

She tells Angel she loves him immediately before stabbing him.
She tells Xander she loves him immediately before Warren appears.
She tells Spike she loves him immediately before he dusts.

More examples and/or commentary?

Maybe she has trouble saying she loves people knowing she'll have to see them again. So she waits until they're about to die before proclaiming it.

Or maybe it's just a way to make the moment more poignant, from a writer's perspective.

Wow. That seems like a very hyper and enraged comment, and not wholly relevant. But nevertheless an interesting perspective.

Okay, so assuming that the proclamation of love immediately precedes death in the Buffyverse, is it worth it? If you were the character to whom she proclaimed love, would it be worth the carnage to follow?

It seems a little bit of a waste, since if the character saying 'I love you' only confesses when the other character is about to die, there's not much point! (Apart from they might die slightly happier I suppose).

It's not always like the in the Buffyverse though! e.g. Willow and Tara... heart

How is that not relevant? xd

If it was Buffy saying she loved me, HELL NOOOO!

Faith, HELLLLLLLLZZ YA!!

Cordelia, sure

Willow, maybe, I love her but I'm not sure her love would be worth dying for whee

Tegan and Sara from the band Tegan and Sara (now thats irrelevant xd ), eek It would be worth dying 1,000 deaths.

maybe the powers are just trying to get the point across. Buffy Summers is the Slayer, therefore she must be alone. Its simple, and thats how it was always meant to be, but here she comes along, refuisng to believe that. You can't really blame her though, but still... Maybe the powers are just saying, "Well fine, if you can't fallow the rules, then we'll do this."

You know what I mean?

That would explain a lot, to be fair...

Maybe. Still, she did win the fight with the First Slayer in Restless, and I guess I took that to mean that she could have friends.

By the way, did anybody else get goosebumps when the First Slayer called herself only "The First"?

I guess it's because I watch the episodes completely out of order, but, it was something I was thinking about.

Yeah, she can have friends, but wouldn't it be spoiling her if they also gave her a boyfriend and such? I mean, you can only go so far in bending the rules with out completely breaking them.

Also, along with the first Evil there has to be a first Hero. Other wise, what would a balance demon do?

True... I hadn't noticed that 'First' reference though, that is quite sinister. Restless is definitely one of my favourite episodes though!

I guess I find it hard to believe that Joss plans THAT far in advance. Some things, yeah, but that's... unlikely.

I cannot confirm... but did she not say 'I love you' to Dawn before she jumped to her own death?

As for the 'The First' comment, that's interesting and to comment on the previous comment... I do think that Joss could plan that far ahead. wink He has these worlds, ideas, characters kickin' around in his brain. Good storytellers usually do know the end of a story. They just keep it secret.

Good points, all. And yay! Finally someone agrees with me on the First thing. I was starting to think I was just too obsessed.

I don't really think it's worth it not for Buffy anyway, I like my sig others to be a BIT more baggage free in the personal relationship department, plus she's REALLY uptight.

Personally I think that it's just a basic operation of any given Joss verse, like hes trying to level out the fact that he lets us laugh.
I think that he likes giving us what we want only to rip it away again.

Willow and Tara get back together Tara has to die

Buffy and Angel do something about the sexual tension (hack xp ) Angel goes evil he gets his soul back he gets sent to hell( biggrin ) then he comes back ( crying ) then he buggers off again

Faith was evil and useing Xander

Oz cheats on Willow and leaves

Buffy say I love you, Spike dies (grrrrrr!!)

Joyce gets better then dies on the couch at home

Xander and Anya start to get married then he runs off

and many more I'm sure!

Heck even if they don't die they leave! (reily xp not that I minded that)

He even does it in firefly, while he didn't get to mess with the relationships in the actual series he did manage to kill the married guy in the movie!
I think that it's just a basic tenet that ppl are not allowed to have long healthy reationships in any Joss verse!
