I'm going for my first professionally done tattoo in the next couple of days, and have been quoted at 60-80 dollars for what I want. I know it's customary to tip, and unless the guy completely botches it, I'd never think of not doing so. But my question is, what's the standard? I've read and heard anywhere from 5 to 20 percent, and would like someting a little less 'ballpark.'
Also, what I've got so far has been done very, very slowly, and by hand with a pin and ink/goache paint. If anyone has had any experience with this versus professional tattooing, how does the sensation differ?

I'd tip twenty, but I'm quite biased. My boyfriend tattoos and only about half his clients tip him, so I know how artists feel when they get a nice tip. Throw him ten bucks at least, that's reasonable for something that's gonna be on you forever. What most people don't get is that many artists work under a 50/50 split shop and usually half their pay goes to the shop owner. So when you do throw them a tip, that's money that they don't have to split on top of their cut. Your artist may only make 30 bucks off of your 60 dollar tattoo, but if you throw him 20 extra he takes home ten bucks more than if he priced you at 80 and you didn't tip at all. A win-win situation. The bigger the piece, the bigger the tip. But keep in mind, when it comes to the cheap ones, they're working for your tip.

I tip 20% as well.
Couldn't tell you how they differ. Only had tattoo machines used on me before. But it feels like scratching and burning.
