Rough attempt at sketch

i'm a writer, i'm a photographer, i'm even a smith, i am not an "artist" in the sense of drawing/painting. but i'm trying to learn. here's my attempt. any insight on how to improve it? (i used a photo of the sketchpad because my scanner/printer is presently packed away in the studio and i dont feel like hauling my laptop down there to scan one sketch.)

A smith? Impressive!
Well, we're all learners here, so don't worry, lol. Your pic looks pretty good for someone who's beginning. There's lots of room for improval, sure, but overall it's really not that bad. It's very expressive. I'd say, keep practicing that anatomy - hands and proportions, though I'm not sure if the proportions only seem awry because it's a photo and not a scan. At this point, there's not much to be said, I think... Happy drawing! ^^
