I decided for my excercise, I want to walk every day, but... will walking alone help to lose weight?

Walking helps people lose weight. Otherwise, why would treadmills exist? The faster you walk, the more calories you burn. The more uphill the ground is, the more calories you burn. You can burn around 400 calories in an hour if you power walk.

I was told from my trainer about a year ago that roughly ten casual steps on even surface = 1 calorie. So by just walking normally, ten steps will burn you a calorie. So when you get a pedometer, he told me to divide the total by ten and that is roughly what I burned from walking alone.
However this change change based on how big of strides you take, the faster you walk, the terrian, and the incline.
So:
Uphill = 5 steps is about a calorie. Sand = 7 steps for a calorie Speed Walking (Cardio) = 6 steps.
Etc.
