Summer is upon us and I think it would be fun to toss around ideas on what to do with the little munchkins. There are fun summer crafts, outings to the parks, swimming, you name it it's out there. I want everyone to post there favorite activity....

I will start... Here is a fun craft that you can do with your toddlers and it is fun cause then they get to feed the birds...LOL
Pinecone Birdfeeder
what you need:
Pinecone. string or wire, Peanut butter, honey, Wild Bird seed
You can use a regular plate, but I use a paper plate or you can try a paper bag or ziploc bag.
Directions coat pinecone with peanut butter and honey, then roll in bird seed, then attach string or wire at top of pinecone and finally hang from tree... Then all you have to do is sit back and watch the birds enjoy their treat.

Well, today we went to the zoo! It was really a spontaneous trip. I just had the desire to go to the zoo. We left at about 10:30 this morning and didn't get home until about 2:30! One great thing about going to the zoo is that it's pretty cheap. (We are in Oklahoma City so we went to the OKC Zoo.) Kids under either 2 or 3 get in free and adults are 7 bucks. The food really isn't that expensive either, but we just took an ice chest with water and sandwich stuff. Cheap and fun!

Zoos offer yearly membership to people that want to go to the zoo all the time like here in sacramento when my kids were younger but too old to get in free and there were 6 including my 3 and my bf's 3... So we bought a family membership, not only did we not have to pay each time we went to the zoo but we got a discount in the giftshop as well.... And we always got invitations to special showings after hours like when they had the albino alligator on exhibit....

We had a birthday party for my 2 and 4 yr olds yesterday afternoon and we had a water balloon fight. They totally loved it! I know the smaller ones that you guys have can't do that, but the older ones can. We didn't get radical throwing alot of stuff since they are little. But they had a ball trying to keep the balloons in their hands and they basically got themselves the most wet by throwing the balloons on the ground and busting them. It was too cute. blaugh

Another fun thing to do is go to the park and if your park has a pond take some stale bread with you and feed the ducks and geese.... Then there is the playground too...

sidewalk chalk! great for anyone old enough to sit and hold things! Yeah, the younger ones you gotta make sure they don't eat it, but man it's fun! (Anja prefers to color on the bannister outside, but it's PVC and no big deal lol) 52pc bucket for under $4. Can't go wrong there!

If you have a peanut allergy and still want to make the birdfeeders, marshmallow fluff works wonderfully, too. xd (and actually, it looks really, really cool. it's all white... and you can do food coloring in it to make different color ones....

If you put cornstarch in tempera paint, you can make "stained glass" (it'll bleed a little through the paper, and the side you paint on gets all shiny - very cool!) Flour will make it crackle and puff (this is a hard one to get the amounts right, though. Salt will make it sparkle like glitter (I think sugar works too, but it degrades too easily..) domokun heart

Another fun thing to do is shadow art... put some butcher paper on the wall and shine a light towards it have your youngster stand btween the the light and paper and trace their outline, then you give them the crayons and let them color away....
Another venue of fun is water colors... you can either tape paper to floor or on an easel put one of your old tshirts on them to protect their clothes and give them a paintbrush and let them do some abstract art... then mat it and frame it and you have instant wall art to hang on your walls....
Or...You can set up the sprinkler in the front or back yard and let them run through it... They will have so much fun.... especially if you join them running through the water and having fun... You will definately feel like a kid again...

When I was little, we used to go on walks around the block at the end of every day (even though we had spent the entire day outside!) and used to have a blast! You can sing songs, and use that raised cement thingie as a stage! It's a TON of fun!

And, if you can get your hands on a Girl Scout's handbook, they have a ton of fun games you can play in there... although, this would probably work out better for older kids! ^_^

My hubby is taking a week vacation from work soon, so we will have to try some of these ideas! heart I know already we are going to go to the zoo. The zoo is free here (the closest to us is St. Louis) but you have to pay for parking, which is I think $5 - $10 per car.... I can't really remember, I haven't been to the zoo for a while.

there are tons of fun things that you can do ..... if you go in your search engine and type crafts for toddlers you should be able to find a wealth of ideas.... let me see you can do beading, and you can use uncooked macaroni for the beads and yarn.... get some tempura paint and paint them in a bunch of different colors and then have the kids string them to make necklaces and bracelets and it is never too early to start making those handmade christmas presents after all we only have 6 months to go....

I did get some pictures, but not of the water balloon fight. I was guarding the digital cam with my life. LOL But I did get the most adorable pic of my cousin holding her 3 mo old daughter. She was in the process of changing her diaper and her little hiney was shining over her mom's arm. I couldn't resist snapping a pic of her chunky little butt! It was adorable! heart

Collage
I use ribbons, rice and other tactile material as well as pictures. Add glitter to glue so you can see something where the little ones miss sticking something on.

You can change the theme too...
If you go to the beach and collect seashells and stuff on the beach.
You can make a beach collage and to make it more fun take a few photos while there and include them in the collage..
All you need is thick paper, elmers glue, beach collectibles, and pictures.

Nature Collage- can be tied into a nature walk and have your child collect pinecones, leaves, pineneedles, acorns, maybe a few small flowers from your own garden etc.... can be done as a 2 day activity for the younger kids... go on walk one day and make collage next day..

when all done with collages, hang either on the fridge or you want it to be a present for father's day you can take it to a frame shop and have them put it in a shadowbox frame... because we all know our children's artwork is priceless!!!!
