So, how did you get started doing either whatever you're doing currently, or when you first got into art?

Starting Out:
When I first got to drawing more often, my friend let me borrow one of his manga. (Inuyasha; now I hate it rofl )He told me to copy one of the pictures out of it, which I did do, but I don't think I have that image anymore. After that, I think I started getting into Yu-Gi-Oh! (which I also hate now :XP smile I just kept copying general things, and soon went into solely original characters. I was making OC's for a few years before I went back to doodling fanart. Granted, I wasn't so great at doing much, but after a couple years of no progress at all, I started watching a lot more anime, and browsing a lot more galleries online. I gathered much of my own inspiration from a lot of those images, and meshed them into my own style. I've been drawing for about... 5 years.

Currently:
lol Hentai/ecchi is where I drew my current coloring style from, and regardless of where its origins are, I still like it, and probably will continue using it. The line work however, is just from a compilation of numerous years of sketching, doodling, and drawing random characters. Proportions should be moderately intact with that of an average human now.

Well, I did the whole kindergarten crayon thing for a while (and was quite good at it, thank you; marginal line crossing) but I really started going when I got into anime/manga, too. At first I was really into Sailor Moon, Pokemon, and DBZ. Mostly Sailor Moon, and I started making loads of OCs for it, with ruled paper, pencil, and crayons, oldskoolplz. As time went by I got better at spotting how a body should fit together, and it didn't seem so important to have to assign a fandom to each and every random character that popped up. I started playing with design, symbolism, and motifs..

And then, deviantart happened. 8O DA was both a bane and a blessing, because it ended up pushing me to continue practicing. Yet it also got me down when I worked really hard and long on a pic, but never got any comments. I got really into oekaki, too, which emphasized even more the 'comment-centric' way I viewed my own art. Eventually I got sick of all the external pressure, even though it had improved my anatomy and more. I abandoned my DA and oekaki accounts.. (although, not having internet for a while probably helped that along. owo wink And I haven't been back in about two years.

Since then I've improved vastly because I started working from photo references and observing real life more. Sure, I don't exactly draw quite as much, but I think it's that whole quantity vs quality thing.

...But then I've just gotten another DA account. sweatdrop Oh well. At least I'm old enough now to not let anything pressure me unduly. Or maybe that's just laziness. 83

On a side note: I love your signature, irony! :"D I feel so horrible for enjoying that, but I do. xD

But onto the topic: I started drawing in the end of 6th grade, maybe the beginning of 7th, and I just fell in love. *-*

I would draw in class, during recess, after school, at home, instead of homework. xD;; (I guess that would explain the horrible grades, no?) Well you get the point. It was my passion. :3

Like most people, I started reading manga with Inuyasha, which really doesn't make sense to me now. How could that art once have been the best to me? It's appaling. But back to the point. . . I would usually just copy pictures; whatever I drew on my own looked like crap. Then eventually I started to try it on my own without any references, and with about a year of practice, I could sort of draw. I suppose those were my creative years, because now, I can't really think of anything to inspire me. D: No more original poses or costumes or even character designs. I guess I should work on that over the summer. But moving on. . .

I started growing a better taste in manga and eventually those styles inspired my current one. I could not draw people with distinguished genders. I tried, and it took me a while to be able to draw a girl that looks like a girl. D: And this only happened recently, too. (But barely. Some people still can't tell. D: )

Now it's the end of 9th grade, and I've started to draw *attempt* realism a little. My manga style is a bit more realistic, too. (Not like Inuyasha, thank god. :"D) And I guess my style is a little influenced by all of the BL manga I read some of the random people on DA that I watch. :3

Oh, and I just recently got into clay. I'm not really serious about anything, but it's fun to mess around with it. I haven't shown anyone though. :"D I still need practice. A whoooole lot of practice.

Hmm let's see..

I've been doodling my whole life, but from about the beginning of last, last year I started drawing regularly and began actually /trying/ to improve my work.

It all began (surprisingly) the same as everyone else.. with Inuyasha.. >.< It was the first anime I watched completely (with the exception of Pokemon and all that crap on tv). I never copied any of the art because, obviously, it wasn't that great to begin with.. but it's what got me into the whole anime style.

I had heaps of OC's from roleplays that I could work on. I thought I actually did pretty well on my own.. until I look back now at my old 'masterpieces' x.x quite shocking really..

At the beginning of this year, I started to get comments and crits from other people, which at first made me very sad >.< But I think I've improved a lot since then. I draw in a really strange anime/manga style.. which kinda bugs me because every time I try to change it, it always seems to stay the same >.< Yeah.. there's my life story..

At last, I finally understand...

Hee, Giraffics, I draw porn a lot lately too ;D

Well, I started drawing when I was in the 4th grade. I was just doodling some aliens in my notebook, then I noticed the legs on one of the aliens looked like the Powerpuff Girls' legs. I'd always been a big fan of the PPG, so I started drawing the characters more often. To be vain, I thought I was excellent and had tremendous talent at drawing blob figures with bug eyes and bouncy hair. Soon enough, my notebook was filled up front and back (which didn't please my teacher and parents at all). But I didn't stop like they asked.

In the 5th grade, I got into drawing anime, which was kind of a bad start, but I had no one to tell me so. I'd draw Pokemon OCs, DBZ OCs and characters, and even make up some of my own stories (to this day, my OCs are some of my beloved characters).

I met Cap'n Matt in 5th grade, I was insanely amazed by her talent that left my little blobs in the dust. But, I think I might be at her 5th grade level now :3!

...only to realize it wasn't as hard as it seemed.

i've always been arty since pre-school, drawing animals and cartoons mainly (simpson-ish type) and i thought they looked pretty good. they didnt... i then discovered anime/manga in around year 9 i think, a new girl at my school showed me some of her awesome anime drawings and i was hooked, i went home that afternoon and attacked my sketch book with big eyed, and quite freakish drawings in "anime" style[x] this is the first of those drawings, notice how bad it is? yeah. bad

but i kept at it and i looked at hundreds of pictures off the net tried new styles and drew all night long sometimes (i still do lol) figuring out how the muscles move and flex (especially on the torso) and the limits of movement etc. i also got tonnes of tutorials from the net on body structure, hands, and whatever i was having trouble with. i got better pretty quick, this drawing was done less than a year after that first one[x] i also picked up some cheap colour pencils and used them [x] that my old art ad from before i changed my name <3 i still love that dragon

i then got photoshop! yay! but i was crap with it...so more tutorials and practice and im starting to figure it out a bit more[x]

then i discovered the cheat that all good artists use to draw, references. yeah, i was slow to catch on to that one sweatdrop i didnt need references for male torsos though, i had that part all figured out [x][x] iv'e still got a long, long way to go though(i still cant draw girls well, and i havent found a permanent style either lol)

lol, i got all nostalgic
PostPosted: Sat Jun 23, 2007 11:13 am

xd This does provide plenty of opportunity to become nostalgic, yes....

Let's see.... Well, I'd always done little doodles and stuff, but I don't really remember doing anything much more than you're average kid. Until I was nine.

My dad went to Japan for a month and came back with some little goodies. He gave me a Sailor Moon handkerchief (I'm a girl, so that's a normal girl-type gift, in case y'all were wondering.) *sigh* I've still got the sticker that thing had on it, too... But, yeah. In each of the four corners were one of the inner scouts and in the center was Moony herself. I liked it a lot. I decided to trace the girls' faces. I would trace and trace and trace, trying to get a better version each time. I was using regular paper because I didn't know what tracing paper was.

One day, decided to try to draw the girls without tracing. That, I think, is when I really started to learn. I only have one of those first pictures now. I would stay up laaaaaate at night with a sketch pad and my set of 96 crayons, drawing and drawing.

Ahhhh, such fond memories... Anywho, so it evolved from there. I went online, discovered more anime, drew those characters created some of my own, found realistic art books, improved upon my characters, found more anime, experimented on my own characters, discovered Deviantart and it's wonderful user-created tutorials, experimented some more, etc. I'm still nowhere near finished, though.

I personally started drawing when I was ..I dont know..in grade 3? they were all really bad though and werent really based on anything.
When I look back at them I dont even know what the heck they are....

I got into the whole anime/manga thing in 5th grade when I met a FANTASTIC artist named Amanda. She's soo good! She's really
the person who inspired me to start that and I drew for the whole 5th grade, (but not very well.. *_*)

Then in 8th grade I had her in one of my classes and she was drawing and it was just sooo good, like professional and so
I decided to try and work on my skills. I dont really draw all the time and if you make me draw I just cant do it TT^TT I
gotta be in ''the zone'' and even if im in ''the zone'' it takes a looonngg time for the simplest of picture @_@ I always envied how
amanda could draw so fast and not need to erase ;O Hopefully I'll be that good one day 3nodding

Yup...so really I just learned from watching her and I bought some "How to draw books"...but I dont
use those now b/c I dont like the style. I
go online too for reference and all that jazz. AND of course I joined this guild! ^_^ Im hoping some people could help me see the flaws and just
make me sooo much better xD Haha dont ask me where my pride went @_@

I started out drawing Sailor Moon in preschool-second grade. I remember sitting there in class, drawing these really stupid pictures. It makes me throw up a little in my mouth when I look at them.

So, I stopped drawing in third grade 'cause I moved to a new school, and personally I was too busy.

Then there was 8th grade. A friend of mine moved to my school too. We were friends in second grade at my old school. She drew. It was contagious.

Yay! Someone else started out drawing Sailor Moon! I don't feel so lonely now. xd
PostPosted: Thu Aug 09, 2007 10:41 am

...euclids...I have that same Sailor Moon hankie...and I'm a guy...

*ahem* On topic...

I started oh, about oh...ten years ago, or so.... I was drawing ship schematics...mostly Star Trek type stuff... My figures were always just blobs...bleh. Until about four years ago when I stumbled across a few books and went to college for art related degrees. (Why...I have no idea...but it worked out okay! mrgreen )

I started college with really crappy lookin' figures, but over three years had some very rapid, if not always steady, growth to what I can do today.

I very rarely do fanart-y stuff, and mostly stick to my OC's.

I'm still a newblet to the art world. =3=

Technically, i've been drawing since i was 3. My little doodles had hair and dot eyes...and stick figure anatomy, ya' know... I sucked for quite some time, untill i reached 7th grade. That's when i met my two best friends, Becca and Jenny. Those two were all, into this anime and manga crapola that i didn't like much, at first.

Both of my friends drew, and at the time, i thought they were AMAZING. XDD I wanted to draw like them, so i began to practice more, and eventually found DA in 2005. (7thgradeluls). the only thing i drew was fanart crap. (very crappy fanart crap, if i must.) Soon after i found DA, i started to get into the Manga...called Naruto. I started to draw Sasuke and Gaara alot, until Naruto started to air on Cartoonnetwork, THEN i became fully immensed in the anime world. XD

Wasn't until recently that stopped drawing fanart, and actually started to draw my OCs, some of them that appeared in my dreams quite frequently.

btwbtwbtw, my two friends suck compared to me, now.

I'm not new to drawing, I've been drawing since I was two? So it's been about eleven years since I actually started to draw.

I started with little doodles of people, and might I say, they were probably better then a normal two year olds drawings, which were usually weird little stick figures or square bodies and heads. My grandma even has all my drawings in a scrapbook from back then, and I look back at those and say, "Wow... I sucked."

I actually didn't get into drawing SO much until the fourth grade when I moved. I became good friends with the preppies, (UGH) and we always doodled on the board at recess, it was always fun. Then... I met the less popular kids, which is where I stand today! (Yes, I never want to be POPULAR!) They all drew so much, and I actually started to draw more when I was with them. I always enjoyed showing them my work, and I was always praised for it. When the sixth grade came around, the popular freaks had a thing for taking the picture I was working on and laughing at it, then crumpling it and throwing it away. crying

After that, I never showed people my work. I kept drawing though, and I ended up meeting my friends skills, and now we're in thee eighth grade, and one of them's so much better. I'm into drawing aime, I like doing fanart (Mostly Naruto fanart, I'm a sucker for it, especially drawing Deidara XDD) Now, I draw Masashi Kishimoto's style of manga, and I'm really good at it too.

I'm addicted to drawing OCs, but I'm always ready to draw more *CoughDeidaraCouch* fanart. All my friends suck at drawing anime next to me, I pwn them all!

Edit 1: Okay, not all of the popular kids did that to me. In the seventh grade during art, these two girls kept asking me things about anime/manga and wanted to know if I was good at drawing it. I told them yes and they asked me to draw them a picture. I came in the next day with a picture for each of them and they LOVED them. They showed them to all of their friends and I still can't get any of them off my backs. O.O;;; I probably had to draw about fifty more pictures after that, it killed me.
