Midnight Circus
................Sometimes you read stories or hear on the news, about children running away; supposedly to join the circus. Some of them are found. But those who are never seen again may have tried to join the ‘Midnight Circus’.
................Sure, it might seem perfectly safe and normal—or at least as normal as a circus can be—with it’s acrobats, animals, jugglers, and clowns. Even the ringleader, though decked out in extravagant madi gras outfits covered in feathers, glitter, and frills. But the circus she runs is not close to safe. For it holds many centuries worth of shadows.
................Those who work in the circus never age—not that the audience ever notices. They stay the same, because the ringleader isn’t human. She’s a succubus. She steals people’s souls; both to keep her young and alive, and because she finds it fun to watch their terror as she slowly extracts their spirit energy.
................If she likes a person, she’ll leave just enough energy to keep them alive, and have them work in her circus.
................So, no matter how friendly or happy they seem, it’s the clowns who get rid of the bodies that are not wanted, because they are just evil puppets.
................You may think that over time people would get suspicious, of so many disappearances surrounding the time when the circus was close. But the ringmaster succubus has found a way around that, too. She had created a master computer. It holds connections to every point on Earth (and maybe a few not on earth), and contains the brains of several of our worlds smartest people; making it seem almost alive.
................This computer could figure out the best place to go without worrying about angry mobs, cops, or people who don’t go to circuses. Oh, and those smart people who lost their brains? They became zombies, though they didn’t get to be brain-eaters, because first thing they ate, were each other to re-death.
................According to the ringleader, seeing this was:
................................“Very entertaining.”
................There’s also a littler girl—a creepy little girl—who serves the ringleader. She helps to lure out victims for the ringleader. The ringleader found this girl, sometime around the 18th Century, and thought she was really cute. So, she kept her with her soul a little more intact than the others. She even gave the girl a blue bat—and yes; it is the kind with wings—to help her find victims. It’s blue because it’s a spirit bat.
................She’s, as the ringleader likes to call her, ‘a pretty little doll.” She will stay the way she is forever.
................Sometimes the ringmaster will give her victims an option: to lose their soul and have their bodies used in the circus or to lose their souls and have their bodies trashed. To decide this, the ringmaster rolls her death dice. It’s not known what needs to be rolled since she’s always changing it.
................There’s always a chance that in the future, people won’t run away from the circus. But then the circus will probably come after them.
