All new members can introduce themselves here. Also, this is the place for off topic banter.

So, welcome!

Alright.

I'm Zeo, captain of this guild. I'm twenty, finishing up my bachelors degree (in philosophy), and my interests are writing, drawing, and discussing social issues.

Which is why I created this guild. Personally, I detest the cultural image being propagated in the media, and I was interested in what other people had to say in the matter. I'm also rooting for social change, and I figure that the more people thinking through these issues there are, the better.

I want to help people become more aware of how pervasive culture can be in our lives, and how new information coming out about our brains and our psychology is helping certain groups and corporations manipulate us easier. (I should say that I'm something of a conspiracy theorist. sweatdrop ) However, we've been manipulated for a long time in much subtler ways. I'm interested in hearing what other people think, and how they feel they've been affected by their culture and media influence (good or bad).

See you around the board.

Greetings, all and wise!

I am Zeophilus, a lover of knowledge and poetry, and keeper of a greater love than either of these. It pleases me to be the second member of this guild, and I welcome all who may follow.

As might be guessed from my name, in regular life I am the constant companion of Zeo, from whose thoughts the impetus of this guild has sprung. We are partners in all things, and this includes our struggle against the perversions of the mass media realm which twist and mar the way ordinary people see the world. Neither the news media nor the cultural scene that it propagates are evil, for if either were intrinsically so it would imply that neither can be changed. The power of the media is in people, and people can be changed for the better. It is to this end that I hope toward- if the hearts of people can be changed, then surely the media could become a source of hope and knowledge, instead of the shallow pool of fear and conformity it now encourages its viewers to wade within.

Greetings,

I am chidori-hime0, this may surprise you, but I am only but a 14 year old. But does that really matter? I am immensely interested in politics and psychology and culture... I love reading and reciting poetry, painting and drawing as well as writing... my best subject in school is LOTE and I someday hope to work for the UN and voice my oppinion on the state of the world and help to make it better. Some call me weird and quirky and oppinionated, but I probably get most of that from my sister who is a major influence on my life, she likes to go on rants about the state of this world and how overrated things get these days. Anyway I am happy to be the fourth member of this guild, and I shall voice my oppinions openly and try not to post pointless stuff.

Hello, I am AnarchoManiac, or you may call me Guruji (my usual internet pseudonym). I don't oppose the media, in fact I love the concept. However I oppose the following:

About the Media:
~What they don't talk about on the news or media.

On TV:
~MTV (Oh sure, put a PSA on "Don't do drugs" and then show music videos that condone it)
~FOX News (Mainly Bill O and and Hannity)
~The 700 Club (Pat Robertson's televangelist crap)
~Cartoon Network (really, their shows are just starting to suck)
~4Kids.tv (they destroy anime)
~Censorship (like when they show the middle finger but black it out. Its pointless; you still know what finger they stuck up)
~Propaganda

In General:
~Too much ads

I will be able to contribute a lot to this guild once my University starts. I am taking a course called "Communications and Mass Media: so I will make sure that I will be media expert ;D

Also this guild will help a lot with my studies if it goes well.

Welcome, new members! I look forward to our discussions!

I guess now would be a good time to talk about the issues that bother/affect me most.

As a philosopher, any system that states "this is how people HAVE to exist" instantly bothers me. So, if pop culture is saying things like "you HAVE to tan; you HAVE to be thin; you HAVE to know a 'celeb,'" I'm concerned. Other than that...I have a huge problem with marketing techniques ("get them to buy, buy, BUY!"), especially children's marketing. Politics, of course, also interests me. There's a million more things (that's why I started this guild!), but that's pretty basic.

Speaking of university, I'm taking a good class this coming semester called "no gods, no masters," which apparently examines anarchy. That'll be a great chance to understand different perspectives about culture and how we organize ourselves.

Hello, I'm Lotus!

I'm a recent college grad with a psychology major and two minors in philosophy and creative writing. I work at a hospital and am hoping to go to a combined PhD/MD program soon (med school really). I love the arts and sciences. I guess cultures and the media would fall under the categories of communications and humanities? Ah, who cares... rolleyes

There are too many stereotypes and labeling in America. I'm big when it comes to cultures because I find that many people still have prejudices against one another when it comes to the workplace or just plain hanging out with "friends", etc. It's disappointing.

Okay, I'll cut off here before I start to ramble an essay of this post. razz I tend to do that. So, sorry. sweatdrop

Look forward to meeting you all!
