What would a world be like without, say, insects? What creature would pollent the plants? What would the birds eat?

Without any single animal group, the entire eco-system of the earth would change. If you mean that they suddenly just weren't there, then there would be mass extinctions before everything adapted to the changes. As for how they would adapt, hell if I know.

I was thinking more of what kind of scifi world would it be in an ecology without bugs... I got to thinking about it because it's one of the things that are rarely mentioned in books--no swatting flies, mosquito bites, etc. in most fiction, even if they are wandering through a swamp or camping in the forest. Sometimes you get a toss-away like 'fell asleep listening to the sound of the crickets...', but in most fantasy novels, you'd think there weren't any bugs. So, what takes the bugs place? Some kind of bird, like the hummingbird? A worm?

Don't know, don't care. I hate those buzzing bastards.
Oh, and I think they just don't mention them. Who wants to read about bugs, anyway?

In theory the plants could perhaps evolve different methods of reproduction. As for insects as a food source, perhaps various species of arachnids take their place. Or if you mean an absence of 'bugs' in general...it could be all sorts of things, land dwelling squid?

It all depends on how you want to portray it.

In sense, if there are no bugs, then plants and animals would be different to adapt to that. Example: Plants evolved to be able to pollinate themselves and reproduce on their own. Animals that eat bugs would also change and evolve to eat other foods. So what ever you can make up to take place of the bugs, and one makes sense, than just go with it.

Sounds like some cool ideas.

BTY, I'm not writing anything with this. I was just infested with ants a couple of months ago and wishing they would all go away, which brought the subject to mind. We have lots of SF where the aliens were bugs--MIB for example--but an ecology withOUT bugs...

Now that I have been pesticided (yeah, I know it's not a word), I am feeling much more mellow about the buggers--pun intended. Still, it's a thought.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

I could create an aweome habitat/planet with just that thought. The plants would be much larger, and have vibrant colors, and certain animals would be smaller, while certain would be larger. Colors and sizes of random things, like grass, dirt, trees, even the air and sky would be different.

Wow, what an awesome thought!

Thanks. Feel free to go with it. wink I will prolly have it show up somewhere in one of my stories eventually, as the idea keeps running around in my head, but that'll be years from now. I am too busy working on the fantasy I've been writing for the last 5 or so years. eek Come to think about it, the first shorts I wrote would be over ten years ago. OMG. crying
