Don't forget Andrew Tanenbaum, author of the MINIX kernel upon which Linux was built. Tanenbaum and Torvalds had quite a loud flame war on Usenet over which kernel was better, Tanenbaum's MINIX (microkernel) or Torvalds's Linux (monolithic kernel)
biggrin According to both Torvalds and Tanenbaum it was less of a flame war and more of a disagreement over software architecture. It was the supporters on both sides that turned it into an epic flamewar.
Also, Linux wasn't forked from MINIX, it was inspired by MINIX. Big difference. Tanenbaum has come to Torvalds defense on numerous occasions when journalists got it wrong and claimed (or implied) that Linux had MINIX code in it.
