Certain essential oils and blends can be used as pretty effective bug repellants and I was wondering if you all had any suggestions for oils and blends to use. I recently baught a blend but it doesn't list all of its ingredients (safeguarding the recepie I guess). So far using this stuff has been pretty effective and it might be great to try and make a similar blend on my own.
If you have any other herb-related suggestions to keep bugs away, float those suggestions around in this thread too!

Citronella?
I read something that says don't eat bananas around mosqitos. It mixes with your body and produces a mosquito attractant. XD

Lucky you. Mosquitos adore me.
Oh, I found something!
HERBAL INSECT REPELLANT
1/2 teaspoon citronella essential oil 1/2 teaspoon eucalyptus essential oil 1/2 teaspoon lavender essential oil 4 ounces distilled witch hazel
Mix ingredients in a 4-ounce spray bottle. Shake well. Spray onto exposed skin, avoiding eyes and mucous membranes. Reapply every 2 hours, or as needed.
Recipe courtesy of Laurel Vukovic. August 2004 Herbs for Health
NATURAL INSECT REPELLANT
2 ounces vegetable oil or vodka 1/4 teaspoon each citronella and eucalyptus essential oils 1/8 teaspoon each cedar and rose geranium essential oils
Combine ingredients and apply mixture directly to all exposed skin. Keep oil away from your eyes and mouth, and be careful not to rub your eyes right away after applying the repellent with your fingers.

I'm one of those unfortunates that nothing works for except DEET. I need a nice strong chemical repellant to keep the stupid things off me. crying

My collection of essential oils is pretty incomplete right now, unfortunately. I'm going to hold off on going crazy buying a bunch of them yet. The stuff I got does generally work. I did get chigger bites anyway about a week ago when I was out in the field, but I *only* got them were I was negligent about putting on the oil blend. xd Ooops.

We don't have chiggers up where I'm from. I have fleas like mad, though.

Tiny little red bugs that give you tiny little red bumps that turn into terribly itchy horrific rashes. The easiest way to get rid of them is to suffocate them with nail polish- for two weeks.

That would require a lot of nail polish. There's so many bug reppellants listed here that I didn't even know about. I need to go to Women of Wisdom to get myself some essential oils.

Iconised Ghost jeez, nail polish on my skin would just about kill it! Trust me. XD After chiggers, you'd take the polish in a heartbeat.
