Is there more to this series than meets the eye? I ask because the first time I read it, I felt like there was some hidden meaning within it... Does anyone know that meaning or feel the same way I do about it? Maybe it's subliminal messaging, but somehow I believe it changed the way I think... neutral

Yes, I feel the same way you do about FLCL having a hidden message. It's so hard to put my finger on though!! ><; It's like I can almost reach it but never really have it make sense. I guess that's what makes the series what it is today.

This isn't the only anime like that, either...
But it seems as through there's something encrypted within the music, the manga, and the anime. The who philosophy of it makes it intriguing, too.

FLCL , to me at least, is a story about growing up. And not just growing up, but growing in general, and reaching out to become something new and splendid. 3nodding
I could go in deeper (and probably will), but don't have the time.

Ja... I always felt there was something more, and I supposed that maybe it was just in the inflections of the voices (something the subbers can't really capture)

I think what is encouraging this feeling is the lack of a theme. What exactly is FLCL aiming towards? And that striving to find out what FLCL means keeps us wanting more. Don't the characters even argue about what FLCL really means? blaugh
To me, FLCL is about discovery. Naota, left with his ordinary life, runs into Haruko who changes his life tremendously. He tries new foods, he adapts to Haruko's strange behavior, and is encouraged to become more of an adult. I guess it's a bit like what Mr. Kagura pointed out. 3nodding
Anime does this, leaving you wanting more. Those damned, brilliant writers!

Don't the characters even argue about what FLCL really means? blaugh No, I think there's a definite theme in FLCL, it just gets lost in the wackiness. Think of it this way...playing guitar (I might be going to far out on a limb here, though), the act of furi kuri (fondling a women's breasts), all the hand-like enemies sent by Medical Mechanica, baseball...I think there's a definite theme of hands in the series. Moreover, I think there's a theme of reaching out, and grabbing something. That's the basis of my interpretation of the show...reaching for the future, and finding the confidence and courage to do so. You can't do anything if you don't swing the bat. 3nodding

Fooly Cooly is like one big acid trip. Just less colorful. And like acid it will mess with your perception of reality.
