Hello. =) My name is Sylvia and I'm 18 years old. I used to play the flute but then I switched to Alto Sax in Grade 10. I know there's a Musician's Forum in the Music Forum for all Gaians to visit, but I was hoping that there are musicians in our guild. I know Kanon Vilente plays the alto too. ^.^ (ALTO BUDDIEZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ >.< ) Ahem. Anyway. I hope this thread will be the Blue Haven Cafe's Musician's Forum and we can discuss anything from projects to music theory help.
Enjoy! ^.^
(I suck at identifying chords by ear. -_- )

The list of musical instruments that I have played at some point (but always badly):
Recorder xd The Clarinet The Piano The Drums The Violin The Guitar
I own a clarinet, a keyboard and a guitar and I never really played any of them after I bought them. I blame laziness and a lack of funds for lessons.

Yeah, I want my own alto sax >.< I can afford it but I doubt my family would accept it because:
1) I have a very loud personality and I show it through my instrument.
2) My family told me that girls playing saxophones looks bad. What they meant is that saxophones are meant for more masculine musicians. -_- "Why don't you stick to flute or take on piano or the violin? Of all the instruments, why did you pick a saxophone? What's wrong with you?" Oh yeah my family supports me. -_-

I've been playing the piano for 10, going on 11 years. I've played guitar for three years, and I just started to take up the bass guitar. :3 I also sing a little, too.

I have a guy friend who's REALLY good at playing the flute. And there are a lot of guys in my old highschool's wind ensemble.

I've played the piano for about 9 years, clarinet for 3 years, recorder xp when I was in elementary school for about 4 years, and violin for 9 years or so. I'm trying to learn guitar. I want so badly to learn how to play the trumpet or the harp (but harps cost OODLES of money, and I don't think I could ever ask my parents for so much...) When I started band in middle school, I either wanted to play the trumpet or the clarinet, but the clarinet section was seriously lacking in players, so I joined them instead...
Clarinets are awesome, though.

I've been playing piano for roughly ten and a half years, the last two being spent on jazz piano and improvisation. As a kid, I really hated playing, but now that I have the skill and the freedom to branch off into other things, I'm beginning to enjoy it more. Plus, I'm fairly sure my jazz group has the most amazing bassist on the planet.
Otherwise... I fiddle with a brilliant synthesizer. Usually I don't end up with anything good, of course, unless I steal a guitarist off the street. I have eargasms for acoustic guitar songs. :'D

*Wanders in with alto sax*
I've been playing for... 5 years now. It's looking a bit battered, and it's only a basic student Yamaha, but I love it so. Someone I used to play in a small band with found his tenor in a barn, who repainted it with black metallic car paint. It made a unique sound when he played it with his crystal mouthpiece... lucky git, he was an awesome musician. ^^
As I've always learnt from sheet music, I'm not so hot at jazz improvisation, which is what I've been doing recently... also, good luck trying to get anything coherent about music theory out of me. x_x My favourite thing is playing in orchestras and wind bands - the sense of power and coordination when you get hundreds of musicians together is one of the best things ever.
Dream instrument to play... the accordion. Or balalaika. ^^

Oh lord. I have no clue how long I've been playing anything these days, maybe ten years. I play, piano, violin, bass guitar, contra bass, guitar, ukulele, viola, cello, I sing and I'm picking up mandolin and I used to play ocarina and tin whistle (both instruments were totaled in a move, never got some new ones).
I have waaay too much time on my hands. I've always been one of those classically trained kids, learned off of sheet music. I can't read tabs, I have this inability to play music if I don't have the rhythm right in front of my face. It pisses me off, though I've gotten a bit better at it. Improv is a nightmare for me. I wish I could do it, but I can't. It very discouraging and makes me hate my classical background.
So naturally, since improv makes me flip, trying to write my own music is hell. It sounds like crap on the piano, and occasionally I will get something good but I never finish. I'm better at writing music on my bass guitar. I've become more comfortable there at least, and I've also begun to be able to improvise on the violin.
I'm going to start piano lessons again, so what I'm hoping to get out of it is to become more skilled in my playing, and more comfortable with improvising and writing. My first piano teacher, very strict and everything had to be exactly write and exactly as it was written. Horrid. I love my bass teacher, he's very relaxed, and encourages that I improvise.
I wish I could play the accordian as well. Lawlz. The accordian is freakin' amazing. That, harp and a dulcimer.

OMG. I just remembered that I'm in Orchestra at school. I play the violin. I just finished Intermediate. Which makes me...
A musician. o.0... In training. Interesting.
Yet, I'm not too interested in it. I play a cheap $70 green violin that I got off eBay. It works very nicely. ^^
....Whaaat? That other violin I got was way too expensive. $600, $15 a month, like hell.
So, yes. ^^

Ahaha, that's ironic; I just got ahold of an ocarina, but I've no idea how to really play it. It seems simple enough in structure, but it'll be eons before I'd manage something vaguely pleasant-sounding. Got any tips?
