There's a lot of controversy in the art world about this and I'd like to hear some views from you Guild members. Is it art? What's so artsy about Duchamp's Fountain (it's a urinal for those of you not aware)? Or about solid color canvases? Or about light patterns? This can lead to Pop Art, too. What's so masterful about a can of soup? And so on and so forth. Discuss!

oh, i have an opinion on this 3nodding

i personally believe that modern art is mostly crap.

solid color canvas = pre-art. you color a canvas one color when you want that color to serve as the backdrop. you shouldn't be able to sell it, because you didn't DO anything.

in my art guild, we talked about modern art for a while. we mentioned specifically an artist (whose name i cannot recall) who made his art by swallowing the paint and regurgitating it onto the canvas. wtf. that's pretty gross and (to me) desperate. that's on the same level as making art with one's feces. why would that be a good idea? i just don't know. the vulgarity of it really turns me off.

main point: if it takes no skill at all and/or requires no forethought, i'm inclined to hate it.

at least light patterns look cool.

about the whole Andy Warhol and his Can of Soup thing. i agree, however i've seen a version of it in my art class where inside the can is some worms, so at least it's a play on words (opening a whole new can of worms). i stick to my main point, though.

in the flicker.

I must admit that some things out there seem rather stupid, but I've seen some really awesome things, too. One gallery I went to just rescently had these painted rolls of paper that were compressed and twisted into these sculptures that looked like ceramics, but it was paper! There were also some resin pieces that looked like paintings at a general glance, but when you looked closer, you saw tht it was made entirely out of resin. I'll have to find some pics to post.
