When drawing your comic, how do you know how you're going to compose it?

Do you have your paper and then get a ruler (or whatever) and divide out the page first to know where the panels will go?
Do you just go with the flow and draw whatever wherever?
Do you do more pre-plan and perhaps use the PC to lay out general ideas and play with that until you get a good balance?

For myself, it depends on what kind of mood I am trying to convey.

With The Mafia I just freehand a brush-tipped pen and draw rather simply with no fancy "camera" angles. Usually the pages turn out ok somehow. sweatdrop

But with MiasoM, it's a bit more serious in nature so I put more thought into arranging the panels and I outline the frames differently.

Generally I pre-plan how I'm going to layout the pages when I start the series though. I also HATE rulers and cannot for the life of me draw straight-formatted pages. xD;; Unless I formatted the pages on the computer.

D: I don't know how that answered your question. I'm a terribly make-shift comic creator I'm sorry. XD;

90% of my comics are all single panel. . . So I guess I can't really help. But when I do think I need more than one panel, I usually just divide the page up for however many panels I need (2, 3, 4, whatever) evenly, or as evenly as I can get without a ruler (because most of the time I draw my stuff at work, I know, I'm a bad girl). Sometimes If I really feel the need for evenly spaced panels, I'll fold two spare sheets of paper in half, one the short way, one the long way, and use them as makeshift guides.
