Alright, so I have a question for the masses here in our lovely guild. In your PERSONAL opinion's I would like to know what you all have to say about smoking. Some people have said it is " Un-Pagan" or "Un-Wiccan" to be a smoker when you believe in Wicca and or Paganism. Now with this question keep an open mind to what the religion/s are about as well as adding in your person opinion. If you're not a smoker and never plan to be that is fine, but do not let yourself make a judgment just on that basis. And PLEASE do not just post things like " smoking is bad ". I would like reasons behind your opinions. ~ Blessings Marii McKane

I think it's up to the person. I don't think it's right to smoke around other people who do not smoke, as that would be considerate. But I think that as long as the person knows what the toxins are doing to their body, it's fine with me.

i think its ok to smoke if your wiccan or pagan or whatever but if you are worried about the toxins in the smoke you can get herbal smokes that have no tobaco in them that can help you either quit or at least help your oral fixation.

This is something that I think deserves a good deal of thought. I personally think that it is against Wicca. Yes, I am all for personal opinion and personal right of choice but how can you expect to utilize your body to create energies to do magick if there are obstructions you're adding yourself? How are you going to be able to go a Sabbat ritual that may be one or two hours without a smoke? People may not be able to and then what will their mind be on? Not on the ritual. I think its a major distraction and to those members of the coven or group that don't smoke, it may be a burden. With what we know today about the hazards of smoking, there's little debate that it's not good for you. I think an addiction in any aspect is not good for your health or your psychie. I also think that alcoholism may be a problem too. I can see drinking ritual wine for libation or for a feast but not when a member shows up to the ritual or ceremony completely wasted. I'm not saying if you do drink you will be that one who does but I'm saying, I don't think there should be any drinking other then wine at the rituals. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe coven rituals are more specific and structured to keep this from happening but I think that addiction = distraction and there's no place for it in the circle.

I actually agree with most of what AffrenSama has said. When attending Sabbat rituals, your mind should be on the ritual, not on wondering when the next time you will have a smoke is. And with recent research, how are other coven members able to rely on someone constantly addicted to a substance that could tear them away from what they had been previously focusing on? I will admit, however, that it is entirely up to the person whether or not they will chance the addition (and possible dissapointment).

If the herbal smokes Witchyboy mentioned don't cause health problems of any sort - then cool, smoke away wink However, I believe that when smoking causes health problems and second hand smoke is given off that that goes against the rede.

My opinion is that it depends on the person. I don't smoke, I will never smoke. It's my choice from the time of 5 years old; my parents smoke, and I'm just fine with that. My boyfriend smokes. Originally it just started out as something to do... then he quit. Then later on, he found out something (on the supernatural side: he has sprits inside himself...) When they start acting up and want to have their own fun, he needs to smoke to keep control. He's tried cutting down, but with stress at school, one of them starts to be drawn by his stress; he smokes. I understand that he needs it (he's one of the few people that probably would need it, and that's to keep calm). Even if he didn't need it, I would still be just fine with him smoking.
One of the spirits is a Dragon, so I think that he likes the smoke...to put him back with old times^_^

well to start this off the smart-a** way, in the christian's eyes if a pagan does not smoke, the bugs will chew them alive at the burning exhibition.
ok now that that's out of the way... i don't approve of smoking at all. be u pagan, christian, or jehovah's friggin witness! smoking is bad m'kay! it does nothing helpful for anyone. all it does is (only because people think it does) relieve stress. well guess what! smoking is like bad karma! it may feel good now, but 20 yrs down the road u're not gonna like the affects of it then!

I can knid of see everyone's stand point on this; I'm not a smoker by the way; I've had pot before, but it's been nearly a year since the last time I did. If other people want to smoke, that's fine. I see it as a bad habit; people use it (like any other addiction) as a crutch, but it is difficult for them to quit, so I'm not going to press the matter.
What I do believe is that those people should be considerate of others around them, and not smoke. Smoking around kids is wrong as well, since they can't even tell you they don't like it, and if they can, they're too afraid to because they think their parents might become angry with them.
I'm not sure if I'd call it unwiccan or unpagan, but I myself, will never put a cigarette to my lips.
Also: Tobacco has never been the problem; it's all the other toxins they put in the cigarete filters. Natives have ben smoking tobacco for years. It isn't addictive. Nicatine is. There's also cyanide in the filters.
As long as those who smoke are aware of the harm they're doing to themselves, by all means; at least then they know the responsibility falls on their shoulders, and no one elses, when they end up with cancer and all these other health problems.
Our bodies are our temples; we should treat them as such; I mean, would you put trash in a temple?
That's what smokers are doing, but again, I'm not condemning them. I haven't experienced the addiction that they have, so therefore, I haven't fought their battle.

I have a wiccan friend who smokes. It makes me sad to see her doing it (smoking is bad in my opinion, I have asked her to stop many times but she won't), and therefore she always smells like smoke... =/
But I do not think smoking is 'unpagan' or 'unwiccan'. My friend functions perfectly fine as a witch, though maybe not as good as one would think from all the years she has been practicing...

yeah smoking is bad for you but it should be the persons choice whether or not to smoke i'm pagan wiccan and i smoke and it doesn't interfear with any of my rituals or nothing... and since i am a solitary witch i don't have to worry bout people not liking to be around the smoke...

I guess in the sense of them jonesing for one during a ritual might make their workings less effective, but there are smokers who can go several hours without a cigarette, or those who are only occasional smokers, and only smoke during times of high stress.
I guess it all depends on those kinds of statistics.

Personally I do believe that it breaks the harm none law. It's dangerous to smoke if only because it can burn your esophogus without getting into lung cancer and junk so you're harming yourself. Harm none includes yourself. It also gives me a head ache to smell the smoke and thus right there you're harming someone like me if you smoke around them. But then again if you happen to be one of the one percent of one percent who aren't harmed in the least medically by smoking and you don't smoke around anyone else then go ahead.
