This thread has been less active than the others - so I am gonna start a new debate. Should the United States of America force people to become fluent in a second language? Yes. We do make it mandatory that you take two or three years of a language (although there are loopholes that can get you away with one) - but there are flaws to this:
(a) usually you can only choose between French and Spanish
(b) you won't become fluent with this
(c) the requirement to pass this class is VERY low, you could probably get away with credits if you know what this means: Bonjour! Je m'appelle Alexandra. J'adore le fromage et je suis la femme! Aurevoir!
So - the question is, should we begin teaching these languages at a younger age? Should we give people more options? Should we make it harder to pass these classes? Should we even need to learn another language at all - or should everybody who comes over here learn how to speak English?
