Okay, so we totally had the worst weekend ever... Friday night some stupid punks spraypainted the tailgate of our nice shiny white GMC Sierra with thier gang logo or whatever. Fortunatly, Chris managed to get most of it off without damaging the truck. But then today he goes into the garage and more than half of his tools are stolen! We're talking HUNDREDS of dollars of tools, that were not covered by insurance. So we figure either it was stolen friday night, or they checked it out friday night and came back for it last night. Some of it was stuff he had just gotten for his birthday like a month ago! And of course they took all the nice brand-name stuff and the new stuff. JERKS!
So now we have to sit around and wait for the cops to pop by... they're going to dust for prints and everything, hopefully somebody who's been caught before pops up. Chris is also going to go to the local pawn shops and offer a reward for if a pawnshop owner calls the cops if somebody comes in to pawn off a bunch of stuff from the list.
If that doesn't work out, we're just screwed.
I've had a car stolen before, that's not even a big deal in this city at all, everyone has thier car stolen at least once (sad, hey?) But B&E is another story! Especially considering this all happened like 10 feet away from our open bedroom window.

Being broken into just SUCKS!

Now i'm paranoid, and we're worried they might come back for the other tools. And I'm gonna wind up shoving my glasses on and jumping to the window every time i hear a bump in the night from now on.

MAJOR DOWNSIDE of living in a big city. So now I'm looking forward to moving just out of town this fall for sure!

Anyone else suffered a B&E?

Never breaking and entering, but my dad was letting this guy live with us (he was my adopted sister's half brother, so it wasn't just some stranger), and he stole like...$3,000 worth of CDs from my dad (gradually over the course of living here) along with countless other things, including two Nintendo DSs (mine and my sister's), a lot of clothes, and a few of our movies and video games. XP

We didn't find out until too late because no one really goes into the room my dad keeps all the CDs in. But once my dad went in there and found out, he threw all the guy's stuff out into the front yard and needless to say he's not living with us anymore.

We pressed charges and there was a court date set and everything, but for some reason at the last minute it wasn't going to happen or something. Which my dad was totally pissed about. I guess despite finding a bunch of the stolen CDs in the guy's room, and him admitting to having done it, there wasn't enough proof it was him? Or that "we deserved it" for letting the guy into our house in the first place? I don't know. It sort of makes me bitter towards the law enforcement and the system. :/

On top of that, my dad's insurance company said they'd only replace the stolen items if he had photographic proof of having all that stuff. Which I can understand, but really, who's going to go through and take pictures of their entire CD collection in the event it just might possibly be stolen someday?

Anyway...that really sucks that you and Chris got vandalized and then robbed (lol understatement). I really hope you have better luck getting the situation rectified than my family did. And I hope when you move, it's into a good neighborhood that's safe for raising a family.

I'm so sorry, Lor. I'm upset over losing pixilated stuff; I can't imagine how you feel.

The people across the street got broken into several years ago. A couple of robbers stole a whole bunch of s**t. At the time, we were having a garage built, and the construction team saw the one of the robbers come out of the house and start running down the street with a couple pillowcases filled with stuff. They chased him down, caught him, and held him down until the cops showed up. xp They were awesome guys.

But they were like you, Reddy. The stuff that had been stolen by the robber that wasn't caught by the construction team never got replaced because they didn't have "evidence" that they owned it in the first place.

I understand an insurance company's need for proof of having had the stuff that got taken. Insurance fraud and all that. I just think it's sort of silly to expect people to go and take pictures of their valuables in the event they get ripped off someday. You never really expect it to happen until it does, so it doesn't occur to many people that they should do something like that.

At least your neighbors didn't end up losing everything. That construction team really saved them a lot of hassle.

Haven't suffered a breaking and entering, however, my mom got us robbed at gunpoint. That was a great time. rolleyes They didn't steal anything really, just some money and some things of value to her but nothing of mine. Good stuff, good stuff.

And you guys make me want to take photos of all my valuables. Not that I have that much, but still. I live in kinda a shady area. There's been break-ins in the apartments, but they're mostly like, drug related -- or that they think they "knew" the people so they knew when to come and where the stuff was, again, drug related and what not. Ah well, good thing I'm not involved in any drug stuffs.

Yeah, apparently some kids broke into my house once and stole all of our video games while my room mate was at work.

It sucked, but it wasn't that bad. I was bummed out because a lot of things I was borrowing were stolen, and I felt bad about losing them. But I didn't even have the money to replace things that I owned, let alone any of their stuff.

I had a lot of the boxes and stuff that those things came in, but nothing ever really came of it. I guess no matter how well documented things can be sometimes, they'll still try to do anything to not pay you.

To be honest it sounds abselutely rediculous to me that you need to have "proof". Jebus you can even just go online and find a picture that someone els took and clame its yours, how will they ever know?

My X's parrents got robbed 2 weeks before christmas in 2005.
It was horrible, they were devistated, except for his mom she was happy. Because 1) they stole alot of s**t they didnt need and 2) they stole all the fake jewelry she had. She kept the real stuff away in a hidden box and she got buttloads of money from the insurance company to replace her "shitty" jewelry, and basically bought a whole lot of reall stuff for it instead. It was really horrible. Specially here in Iceland, I mean for christs sake we have only on average 2 murders a year in the whole country, and in 99% of the cases its a drunken brawl or a husband/wife that confess instantly (while standing in a pool of blood still mind you). Iceland is really safe as heck that way, which is why it was pretty unbelievable to us. It did make buying christmas pressents easier.

The insurance works diffrent here I think. Because alot was stolen, but they got more then enough money to buy it all back. They had this huge tv that got stolen, but this tv was abselutely anchent and if you watched DVD's in it, they would be black and white. (abselute horrible thing, I hated it) And they bought a new one, even bigger, totally new. Which was kinda handy because us the kids (as in my X, his two sisters and all their partners) put our money together and bought them a brand spanking new sound system which was awesome.

It was really weird and unbelievable. His parrents were pretty calm though, and just took it with ease. Nothing of reall sentimental value got stolen, only electrical stuff and face jewelry.
But I have never been that close to crime before. And hope not to be ever again.

I think here as long as you file a proper police report there's no problem.
Unfortunatly the amount they stole vs the deductible + how much our home insurance would go up next year makes it not worth it.
Doubly unfortunatly, with a baby due anytime between now and next month, and every other spare dollar going towards the fact that we're building a house just outside of town (not as bad as it sounds though cos chris has so many contacts in construction a lot of ppl will work for steak&beer&to help out a friend) ... we just won't be able to replace the stuff.
However I'll watch the online marketplaces for somebody trying to sell Mastercraft wrench sets, particularly because one wrench will be missing from one of the sets, chris had it in his truck. So far as he can tell all they took were the highest namebrand tools, the mastercraft wrench sets and a jigsaw. Still hundreds of dollars worth of stuff. The jigsaw was a gift from my dad he got for his birthday last month. : (

Chris is more upset about the whole thing than i am, partially cos i'm not super emotional about Stuff. But then again after his initial reaction he calmed down, I'll be pissed about it for longer.
However if they broke into the house I'd be devastated. Especially because a lot of the stuff they would steal is Mine. Yeah, it's ours, and most of it bought together, but still, the possessiveness is there for me for the stuff in the house.
MY TV. MY COMPUTER. MY DVD PLAYER. MY ART SUPPLIES. (okay, who'd steal those, idk. They're worth a lot of money but i doubt your average thieves would realize that. If you're gonna B&E you don't tend to know whether art&craft supplies are namebrand or not.)

I really hope that you get atleast some of it back.
And by the way congradulations on the baby on board. heart
Its a really unhandy time for something like this to happen.
I do hope that you maby find a way to atleast feel abit safer in you own home. Because nothing is as uncomfortable as feeling unsafe in your own home.
Let us know how it goes.

My brother used to throw parties at our parent's house when they were out of town, and usually a bunch of people we really didn't know showed up, got smashed and caused trouble.

Well, one time one of these drunken stangers decided to help him or her self to our DVD player and ALL of our DVDs (including my special anniversary addition of RHPS and my mother's copy of Dirty Dancing).

And somehow..no one saw this happen or this kid walk out with all this stuff.

Insane.

P.S- Good luck catching the kids how took all your stuff!

Which big city do you happen to live in?
PostPosted: Mon Jun 18, 2007 3:07 pm

I once was Z.i.A
Which big city do you happen to live in?

I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Where getting your car stolen pisses the hell out of you more than anything else, and you get car insurance breaks for installing an immobilizer.
I know people who have had thier car stolen twice or three times, sometimes different vehicles.
One of my friends got her car back from getting repaired when it was stolen, and the next day it was gone again. She was soooo mad.
Another friend was standing there talking to his boss with the truck running not five feet away and some drunk guy just jumped right in and tried to take off. But they were a bunch of construction guys and it was a company truck, so they were all like HELL NO YOU DONT and chased him down. The guy was too drunk to think to lock the door after he got in. So he got nice and arrested.

The new fun game for teens seems to be stealing vehicles and trying to run people down with them, how sick is that? it happened i think twice two months ago? So now the penalties for stealing a car are going way, way up.

So maybe that's why they changed our logo from Friendly Manitoba to Spirited Energy?

My sister rented a car when she came down for Christmas. Rented... and it gets keyed from the back seat doors to the end of the passenger side door.

It was totally out of the blue. I mean, they didn't break in to steal anything. Somebody just must've been a total jackass and decided, "Hey! I'm gonna key this car, cause I can!"

We proceeded to buy cover up stuff, because just our luck, she didn't get insurance for her rental.

a guy i know had his car keyed, all over the car, and it said ******** and stuff. He was going around telling people it was my husband (then boyfriend) Chris! cos him and chris used to be friends and then he started dating this chick that is such a gossip and rumour queen and she and chris had a falling out (they're cousins) so she always spread s**t about it, so chris just stopped hanging out with them both.
Except the guy was spreading it around at work that chris had keyed his car and chris' older brother is like 3rd highest up there so he ripped the guy a new one and pointed out that 1) he had no proof and 2) everyone knows that if chris had a problem with him he would punch him in the face before keying his car, because chris respects people's property and isn't a sneaky jerk.

Then the guy got his car fixed and it got keyed again, and he didn't say a word about chris.
Considering the guy was taking legal action against his brother for credit card fraud and id theft, i'm guessing it was him. I'm guessing he guessed it was his brother too. He wound up moving to a different neighbourhood and legally changing his name and not telling his family what his legal name was.

I live in the second worst area of my city. It's not poor, but the housing developments two blocks away are, and these are the worst things to ever happen to me.

-2 Bikes stolen left in the front yard when I was 9 and 11.
-Some opened my mom's unlocked car door at 4 AM and took her wallet. It was recovered and they were arrested a few days later.
-I left my car unlocked about 8 months ago, and some one stole all my burned CD's. Left the Camera, the Gameboy, the stereo, but NO, they needed that hand scribbled copy of "Get Behind Me Satan".

NOW I DON'T HAVE ANY WHITE STRIPES CD'S.

That's it, and this is spanning 10 years.
That is average for any city living, even less so.
