I live in the suburbs, and there is a creek which branches off from a river nearby that runs pretty near my house. And it is filthy. I want to do something about it but I'm not really sure what to do. My friend and I want to organize something to clean it up as a summer project. Now that I'm going to start high school everyone needs community service hours. I believe in order to graduate everyone must complete 50 hours of community service. I don't think finding help is the problem.
But the water is gross, there are soda and beer bottles floatind in it, plastic bags, bits of newspaper, and amongst the more interesting items I've found there; a tire, a vaccum cleaner, a pair of jeans, a purse filled with mexican money, and a pair of windchimes. Other than all the garbage the water occasionally has a gasoline "glaze" to it. I know how to get all the garbage out but not really how to purify it with out building a purification plant. The other thing is I'm pretty sad because many animals live there because they have nowhere else to go. And their not the healthiest animals either. It's sad what people will do to their own environment. Does anyone have any ideas to how I can get started?

Well, I think if you clean away a lot of the rubbish, the eco system should begin to sort itself out, cleaning the water...It should...

It's a great idea to clean out the rubbish. =)
I don't like the sound of the gasoline "glaze"... Maybe you could find out if something is polluting the water upstream, like a factory? Or I guess it could be stuff from cars that's run down off the road.
What about making a sign with something like "No Littering" on and sticking it up by the water to try and deter people from throwing in more rubbish.

To be honest I believe it's the local kids polluting it. Some try to clean it out but...Well here's an example. The stream runs through a field that is owned by my little brother's school. I usually have to pick him up and walkhim home because my parents work late and they don't trust him to walk home by himself. There's a bridge over the stream and we were walking behind two girls. One was eating a bag of pretzels and the other was drinking a soda. They finished and threw the bag and bottle into the stream. I was just about ready to smack them.
