There are currently 4 new Sonic games in the work. Sonic Rush Adventure (DS), Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, Sonic Rivals 2, and the newly announced Sonic RPG.
My thoughts are if that 3 or all of the games go well, then Sonic will regain some of his former glory.
2 or more of the games go bad, he'll go down. Even if 2 go good, it'll be heavily criticized for no damn reason, and scar Sonic for life. );
If Sonic Rush Adventure plays and functions as well as it's predecessor, then we got a solid Sonic title.
If Mario and Sonic goes well, then Sonic will be heavily jumped up again in fame (thanks to both Mario and Sonic's large fan audiences, and the combination of both franchise consumers, the game should be a world record seller!) On the other had, if the game goes bad, then Sonic will be blamed and Mario and Sonic haters will hate Sonic even more.
Sonic Rivals 2 sound promising. The only thing that may be a problem is that if the 2 new characters are NEW, instead of old classic characters, that will drive some Sonic fans crazy about the add on of constant new characters.
The Sonic RPG seems in good hands since it's being made by a good company, BioWare. Though some good companies can go from awesome, to trash (Our beloved SEGA is an example D: ) This game may help Sonic out a lot.

Also a side question:
Do you think that Sonic would have better games if he had a console to call his own? Like back when he had Dreamcast, and Genesis? (The Sonic games on those rocked!)
So if SEGA's Dreamcast was successful, it would've lead to another system, and would then Sonic games do better, or worser?

Ok i already have Sonic Rush Adventure and let me tell you... YES!!! thats one gold medal...And i have Mario and Sonic at the olympics^^ not bad at all...i havent touched the Rivals series though...and heard little about the RPG...
