Title: Writer's Guide to Character Traits (second edition) Author: Linda N. Edelstein, PH. D. Price: $17.00 US Description: This book was written by a psychologist, so it's very reliable. It has many easy-to-understand bulleted lists on anything from different personality types to traits of a kleptomanic to traits and self views of white collared criminals. It also discusses relationships between families, children at different ages, immigrant families, etc. It is a very valuable resource and is especially good for helping you recognize how certain traits can become other traits (like how independence can become misanthropy) and for putting in odd diagnosed mental quirks to spice up your characters.

Title: Dynamic Characters Author: Nancy Kress (she is an author of many fiction books) Price: $17.00 US Description: Contrary to its name, this book is more for creating realistic, interesting characters that will interest readers than for helping you to make your characters dynamic. Nevertheless, it is a valuable resource despite the fact that it is mainly text and can be a bit hard to slog through, particularly in comparison with the above book. It uses tons of examples and portions of text from novels, many of them well-known. Most of all, though, it shows subtle ways to help your characters display their personalities simply by using one sentece, a short news clip, or style of dress. This book helps you to better express your character and make them seem alive. For those who have difficulty with realistic characters (myself included), you might want to flip through this book.
