I am always looking for new authors to fall in love with, but I have a crappy bookstore in my town. Plus I hate thinking something is going to be good but turns out to be crap. So this thread is for two things, first if you come across anything you absolutely hated post it here. Others can nicely disagree but thats it. The second and main thing is to put favorite authors. Now with the authors put alittle about the genre, writing style, books you werent as thrilled with, books you loved, and etc. Other people can also add one to what you wrote by quoting your post and then filling out what they think of the author.

Mercedes Lackey- to me her writing is usually non-modern fantasy(aka no fancy technology/ olden times), she has magic in her worlds and doesnt write overly complicated. The subject matter to me is high school and up. Her best books would be the Valdemar ones, and the ones I liked least would be Obsidian trilogy and the Bard books

Angie Sage- She's a brand new aurthor of an amazing series called Septimus Heap. She is a fantasy writer, her books in teh series are: (in this order) Magyk, Flyte, and Physik. They are all wonderful and take place in a sort of medieval time era. The books aren't based off of any historical events, they are pure fiction. I highly recommend them! They can be found at any Barnes & Noble. Or maybe other store but i only go to that one place. Check 'em out!

Anne McAffery: The Dragonriders of Pern series is absolutely amazing, it's more fantasy than Sci/fi, but it's got both there. Also, I really enjoyed Acorna, which is pretty even when it comes to the Sci/fi-Fantasy. Really, there isn't anything by her that I've hated.

Right now I'm in the middle of re-reading Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein. It's purely Sci/fi, and it's a military adventure, about a young boy who decides to Join the Army, mainly to piss off his dad, and goes through boot camp and war.

Here's an piece off the back cover:

"The historians can't seem to settle whether to call this one 'The Third Space War' (or the fourth), or whether 'The First Interstellar War' fits it better. We just call it 'The Bug War.'"

Now, I'm not usually one to stray from books that either have a female as a main character, or has a good amount of romance, but this book is one that all Sci/fi lovers/writers should read.

I tend to love most things by Mercedes Lackey or R.A. Salvatore.

I especially recommend Salvatore. He's just an excellent epic fantasy writer. That said, most of his books are Forgotten Realms D&D books, but they are intuitive enough to be read by even strangers to the series. I especially recommend his Drizzt and Entreri books, although he has some excellent works outside of those two series.

I don't have any author specific recommendations for the sci-fi genre, although I second Anne McAffrey's nomination. And of course the entire Dune series, although I hesitate to name an author on that since so many of the books weren't written by the original author.

#J.B. Stephens = Wrote the series: "The Big Empty". He isn't to well known in my communtiy, but I enjoy his work immensly. Also, he is a sci-fi writer, if you are into that genre. It's more of a futuristic setting like the Fire-Us trilogy, but not quite.
#James Patterson= Maxmum Ride. You probally already know about that one. . .

Tamora Pierce: she writes fantasy, and her main characters are girls(Briar from the circle of magic being the exception) I don't know how to say this right....she is very good with character development. They are all really interesting, I always like Numair from the Wild Magic Series.

Sarah Zettle: she's new on the scene. Her Isavalta series is aaaaawwwweeessome. She took some old folklore(I think it was likely Celtic) and created an amazing system of gods, spirits, magic, and sacrifice.
Her characters are sensible but average in personality(she did have one man cry, amazingly enough over something that wasn't death or the end of the world).

Medieval Fantasy is the word your looking for. Lackey is good. I like Valdemar and the 500 Kingdoms. But if your not into somewhat fluffy romance, don't read the latter. It's not straight romance, but it may seem like it.
I loved some of her extra books. The Black Swan and The Gates of Sleep are particular favorites. At times, her style may seem a little dry, and hard to attach to, but once you get in she's very good.

I'm a prolific rreader so I have a lot of favorite writers. Can't find any that can keep up with me! blaugh

Just found a new author I'm really enjoying, Naomi Novik. She writes alternate history--what the Napoleonic war would have been like if dragons were real animals. She's up to book 4 now. Just out and I have it in my queue already.

The first 7 or 8 books of the Anita Blake series by Laurell Hamilton. Unless you like more sex than story, don't read past Obsidian Butterfly, though.

Not SciFi, but enormously funny is Janet Evanovich's By the Numbers series. The Between the Numbers books have superheros and villains in them...

If you like mystery with your scifi, try J. D. Robb's In Death series.

I'll put more up as I think of them, if you'll let me know what you think of them.

Between the Numbers? Like Visions of Sugar Plums? Plum Lovin'?
The regular series it better. Diesel's cool, but Ranger's ten times better. The Stephanie Plum books are hilarious. Especially after 7.

I AGREE 100%, OMFG. I don't normally like that kind of stuff, but I picked it up one day because I was stranded in the train station for like, 2 hours and needed SOMETHING to do and thought I'd give it a chance. Fell in love with it after three pages. I haven't gotten the 4th book yet because I'm waiting for the paperback. So much easier to cart around with me on the train X3 Don't say a thing!

If I don't like an author I don't read them and don't remember them. But as for the people I like:

Orson Scott Card: Sci-fi and fantasy, if what my friend says is correct, although he also wrties other stuff. Ender's Game was the first of a series, and so good. I've actually only read two of his things because a lot of his stuff is depressing. I never read the rest of the series because the first book was so sad! (The other one I read by him, Wyrms, was also good, if a bit hard to understand at times, what with explaining alien species and how they adapted to us on their world. I'm reading another of his right now, Treasure Box, which is just about a regular guy who's . . . well, it's complicated, and I'm not going to ruin it.)

Diana Wynne Jones: Fantasy writer. She's the kind of author that writes a whole book with some parts that seem unconnected until the end, when it all comes together to make perfect sense. I read Howl's Moving Castle five times, and I never read any book more than twice before that. Her Chronicles of Chriestomanci is good, as well as her Gryphon series, and . . . actually, I never found a book of hers that I didn't like.

Terry Pratchet: He wrote The Discworld series. A lot of his stuff is fantasy, although not all. . . . What would you call a story with ghosts? I don't know if it's really a ghost story, since it's not scary. . . . His writing is funny and challenges the norm of how things should go in traditional stories, although I wouldn't suggest reading all of it at once. Like the Redwall series, it'll get tiring after a bit. Not that they all end the same or anything like that, just that the way he writes it. . . . Once again, hard to explain. I need a larger vocabulary, it seems.

I love Mercedes Lackey- escpecially the Obsidian and Arrows triolgy. I haven't gotten around to going through my dad's bookshelves to find the other books by her yet, but I know she's an awesome author.
Also, I absolutely adored her book, "The Godmother". A must read for those who like a spicy romaance, but one that isn't the main idea. It has a flowing plotline, great characters, and overall amazing phrasing and words. Seriously, go read it.

Her 500 Kingdom books are fairly good as well, they're a touch more romantic then usual, and definently lighter. Also her fairy tale rewrites: The Gates of Sleep(Sleeping Beauty), The Black Swan(the swan princess), The Fire Rose(Sleeping beauty). They are all VERY different from the original prose.
