Hey hey! I'm just starting this thing up, but this is a place to introduce yourself/tell the guild when you found out you had diabetes.... so I'll start.

My name is Ally, and I got diabetes when I was 16 (In fact, a month before I turned 17) I had been sick for a long time, and through out the month of Feb to the end of March, I lost 30 pounds, I was extremly tired, and thirsty ALL the time. (Like... I drank 2-3 liters of water a day o_O;; )
So I went to the doctors on week three, and they thought I only had a throaght cold or something ( gonk ) and after five days, I went back to the doctor where they took a blood sample. My family got a call in 8 in the morning when my dad told me, "We have to take you to the ER they think you have diabetes."
(and hell, I freaked out).
We went to one hospital, and then they had to medivac me (Via helicoptor >w>) to another hospital where I spent the whole day in the ICU.

And now I'm better than evar! >w<
I'm really exctied to meet other diabetics, I only know like... 2 other diabetic kidsand one of the m graduated from school ><

smile Nice to meet all of you!

Well, I started feeling really sick about a month & a week ago. I drank lots of water. Like Ally said, probably about 2-3 Liters a day. Anything to drink I would. I had really bad acid reflux, dizzy, uncordinated, confused, breathing more deeply and loudly, but shorter breathes, blurred vision, and all the other symptoms. I weighed 130 at 5'3" and lost 25lbs in the course of a week. One night my fiance found me on the bathroom floor with grey skin. He rushed me to the doctors office. They wouldn't touch me, they called an ambulance. Two doctors at the first hospital thought I was dead and then they rushed me to another one. They put me in the ICU with about 5-7 different IVs, bruised up/hematomas, and with a breathing machine on meh. They said I bled all over the E.R.(central line) and that I kept trying to pull my IVs out. I had fallen into a coma. Diabetic Ketoacidosis. I had a 50/50 change of living within 30 minutes.

I'm now a type one diabetic. Basically the acid in my body started to eat away at my muscles, fat and organs because my immune system attacked my pancreas and killed the insulin creating cells. They also said I had a potassium imbalance, as well as magnesium, electrolytes and stuff. Basically everything I was eating was being flushed right through my urine and my body was using the muscle and fat it was eating as my energy since everything was just passing through me without digesting properly. >< They said my pee was almost black. XP

Well, that's my story. Don't worry, I'm doing awesome now! LOL! Also, if you have any questions about what happened, or about diabetes and what to watch out for don't be afraid to ask me. I don't bite. Except for my fiance. ;D

Hello, my name is Joey. I was diagnosed in my 15th summer. I had all the classic long term hyperglycemia symptoms: extreme thirst and hunger, frequent urination(more than twice a half hour!), lethargy. My sugar checked in at 534 when I was hospitalized. My mom thought I had been drinking, because my urine smelled like alcohol. Im happy everyday that I dont have something worse and that its manageable.

Well I was diagnosed Type 1 January 24, 2007. I think everything started over winter break. I had the worst migranes I've ever had in my life for 3 days straight. Then from that point everything started going down hill. The usual symptoms, peeing all the time, very tired, extremely thirsty...you know the drill. My parents thought that it was all in my head when I started complaining about the symptoms. So on the 23rd I kinda had a mental break down. I lost it on my parents, screaming at them that I thought I was going insane becuase of the amount of liquid I was drinking and peeing. That school was driving me nuts because I couldn't stay awake in class. Something I've never had a problem with, I love school. Also my mood swings were becoming so extreme I was scared that I was gonna hurt somebody.

So after this meltdown my parents finally decided that something was wrong. My mom told me that I was going to stay home from school the next day so that I could visit the doctor. I went a little nuts at this because I had my Calculus final that day but she said there was no way in heck she was going to let me go to school. So I just went to bed that night. I slept for most of the next day and she woke me up in time to get to the doctors appt.

When I finally talked to the doctor and began describing the symptoms he told me that we needed to check my blood sugar. The meter couldn't read how high it was all it said was HIGH. So he told me I had diabetes and I needed to get to the ER immediately. They drew blood and and it came back with a 804 Random BG. I have no idea why I was walking.

So I spent a week in the hospital learning all about Diabetes. I could've gotten out earlier but my BG wouldn't go below 300. We finally figured out that I'd been getting the wrong meals and they weren't giving me enough insulin for the amount of carbs I was eating.

So that's my story.

Hi, my name is Andrea, and I was actually diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when I was 5 years old. I'm now 21, will be turning 22 at the end of this year. I've been on the insulin pump for about...2-3 years now. Forget exactly how long lol. My bloodsugars have always been under pretty good controll until here recently when I started suffering from anorexia and other things...but I'm not going into that here sweatdrop

When I was diagnosed, my mom and dad had left me at a friends house so they could get my siblings things together to spend the night over there while they took me to the hospital. My mom had told her friend not to feed me anything or give me anything but water to drink. She ended up giving me 3 halves of a pb and j sandwich and like...5 cups of regular coolaide. I had been wetting the bed for a week or so before my mom decided to take me in, and I had been drinking a lot more. When they got me to the hospital, my bloodsugar was in the 900s and the drs kept walking in and out of the room, and when my mom asked them what they were doing, they said they were looking for a little girl with a really high bloodsugar. They said I shoulda been in a coma, not just sitting there in bed.

I was diagnosed at 5, giving myself my own shots at 6. I've always been pretty independant with my diabetes, and I hate the attention, so I don't tell people unless they absolutely need to know.

Hi. The names Morgan. I was diagnosed with type one diabetes when i was 5 years old. I will be 18 in Dec.
At the time i remember only wanting to drink water (and alot of it too!), not playing as much, and i had lost a lot of weight as well. I do not remember much about it since i was so young but i do recall all of the needles and tests. And all of the gifts i had! ^^.
I have never been afraid or bothered by the needles even when i was 5. I guess that is a good thing though! ^-^.
At first i was getting 2 shots a day and gradually i went to 3 and then a few years ago up to 4. That is when i was put on the insulin pump. Ive been on the pump for 3 years now and its made me alot healthier.

Its nice to meet you all and hear your stories. I look forward to talking with you all about our experiences.
thank you~

Hello all,

I'm Amy, and was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, about 2-3 months ago. I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant, but returned to normal for a few years before developing type 2. I'm on metformin to keep my blood sugars under control, as well as following the usual diet & exercise guidelines. I also take l-thyroxine to control my hypothyroidism. I just turned 30 in July, which might make me the oldest one here?

Anyhow, not really a dramatic story... just diagnosed through routine bloodtests.

Hey, there. Name's Wish, sixteen, female.

I myself am not diabetic, but it runs in my family on both sides, and I'm familiar with invisible illnesses, as I have two. Being that there are probably more diabetics in the world than I would assume, I'm interested in learning to prepare sugar-free foods, so that my baking can be a little more people-friendly. Nice to meet everyone.

Hi! I'm Jenna. I was diagnosed with type one when I was 7 years old. I'm 17 now. They diagnosed me before I felt any symptoms because I was in some type of diabetic study. I was referred to the program because my brother is diabetic, and they were doing research on siblings (or something like that, I'm not sure). He was diagnosed at 2, and he's turning 23 in a few days. smile

I'm not on the pump, though I was between the age of 9 and 13. I quit using it since It was annoying to have it cling to my hip. Though I wish to go back to it now, I just need to first prove to my doctor that I deserve one. x) He's really reluctant to give patients the pump.

Hello. My name is Daniel.

I've had type one Diabetes for about a year and a half now. We discovered it when I was 17 last summer. My mom had noticed some of the symptoms last summer when I was drinking a lot, using the bathroom a lot (from so much drinking obviously ;P), I'd be constantly sleeping, and still tired despite all that.

We went to the doctor, and he diagnosed me with it. Thankfully, my mother caught it, and I never got close to being in a coma. I lost nearly 40 pounds and went from 210 to 170 in just a couple of months.

I've been using my syringes ever since then. The doctors REALLY tried to convince me to use the pump, but I felt that there was no point in learning/knowing two systems when I could just do it one way. Pump also seems like too much of a convenience and I'd get waaaaay fat. D=
Although I already am. (I gained back the weight!...and then moreso. >_<)

Diabetes actually helped me to start eating more healthy of course. I eat more fruit and such. I also drink a lot more water.
That's all I have...thanks for letting me join. ^___^

Hey! I'm Strawberry-Plum, a type one diabetic. Wish I could share my story with you, but the truth is I have absolutely no memory of it whatsoever. I was diagnosed when I was 15 months old. My mom tells me that I had fruity-breath, I drank a lot, and a went to the bathroom a lot. I was taken to the hospital, but it was small, and they couldn't figure out what was wrong with me. So I was rushed in a helicopter with my mom and flown to a larger hospital, where I was diagnosed. Now, at 13, I am currently on the insulin pump, but other than that doing fine.

Hi:
I was diagnosed with diabetes type 2 about 8 months ago. It was scary for me because I was such a sugar and chocolate addict and because I had been diagnosed with high blood pressure a year before. I am taking pills for that which made me go to bathroom as the high blood pressure pills make you get rid of water. At the same time, I have to drink a lot of water to make sure I don't dehydrate. I am also on metformin for control of the sugar levels. I have been very watchful and keep a good diet so my sugar levels for the most part are normal. (I only cheated once for my friend's birthday and had a little sliver of cake). My diabetes was discovered on a routine blood work done for the doctor that treats my blood pressure. My name is Dory.
