Topic, maybe?

Needless to say, each actor has a special way that they go about finding and develpoing their character. Their motivation, one might say. There are a few schools of thought in this matter, but the ones that I've really been taught use your Emotional and Sensual Memory. What are those?

Emotional Memory: When you use your own past experiances, recalling them and how you felt and using those emotions for your character. Some actors believe that this is unhealthy and won't go near it. They feel that it can desensitize the person or even open old wounds. Others believe that it gives a more human feel to the character, making them more real.

Sensual Memory: It's the opposite of Emotional Memory, in a way. Instead of using personal experiance to find emtions, some actors recall times when they saw a certain emotion being portrayed and try to copy the look. They believe that it leaves you open to still experiance your own memories without having to recall them over and over and over again. It keeps them strong and personal. On the other side, they believe that the characters aren't as real.

Which do you believe is the best or more emotionaly sound? Do you prefer one to the other? Or, do you have a completly different method?
