~ Chapter 1 ~
“No…please…don’t…” “Kari! Kari!” “Ah!” Kari sat upright in her bed, Cealon letting go of her shoulders. “ What happened?” she asked him. “You were having a nightmare or something, because you have been screaming out things like ‘ please don’t hurt him ‘ it was kind of freaky.” He got up from her bed and walked over to his own, putting some clothes in to a knapsack,” Are you sure you have to go on this trip now? I mean, I get that you have this ‘feeling’ but, you just don’t really seem up to anything right at the moment.” He finished putting his clothes in the bag, so he buckled up the bag and sat on his bed. “ Mom’s worried about you too ya know. She thinks you’re not ready to go back yet, and I think she has a point. With you being as weak as you are we don’t have much protection, since I can’t really fight that good yet, and” “Don’t worry about her being weak anymore.” Someone said as a tall, young man walked into the room. He was about 6’ 1”, lanky, and seemed to be in his late twenties. “ Here Kari I made this for you.” He handed Kari a bottle full of rather small pills. “ Now how are those tiny little things going to help keep us protected, Darius?” asked Cealon surprised to see the man there. “Those little pills can do a lot,” he replied, not taking his eyes from Kari, “ Look, I have designed these pills especially for Kari, since she’s a little…different from the rest of us. These will keep up her energy. Now listen Kari, for them to work properly you must take three of them, every six hours. By doing so your body should feel, as it was normal again. Now, I’m sorry but I have to leave and I wont’ be able to see you before your own departure so, please be careful and mind yourself.” He said as he bent down and kissed her forehead lightly. “ May the stars be watching over you always, my sunrise.” He gave her one brisk hug then turned to Cealon. “ You better take care of her or you’ll be on my wanted list.” He said and walked out the door. There was a brief moment of silence until Cealon sighed, “ Well, since you insist on doing this, you better finish packing. I think it would be wise to take those three pills now, so my ma sees you looking good. I mean not that you don’t always look good.” He blushed, as he picked up his pack and walked out of the door, not turning his blonde covered head back to look at her with concerned crystal, blue eyes. “ Well, that was an interesting way of starting off the morning.” She said to her self as she opened the pill bottle, took three pills out, and put the cover back on. “Was Cealon blushing when he complemented me?” she whispered to herself. She shrugged the thought off and reached for her glass of water on her side table and took the pills.
Kari trotted down the stairs around fifteen minutes later, holding her pack, dressed and ready to go. She was dressed in a pair of boys’ breeches, she often wore them she thought they were quite comfortable though she does like dresses, and a white long sleeve shirt, with a pair of working boots. Cealon’s mother came running over to her and they went into a lasting hug until Cealon pointed out they ought to get going if they were going to reach the next town by nightfall. They slowly released each other as Cealon’s mother said, “Oh I’m going to miss you sorely, Kari. You know you are always welcome into our home. Just promise me you’ll visit me and Cealon every once in a while after he returns.” “Of course I will Miss Katcher. You were like a mother to me and I’ll never forget it.” With that said Kari gave Miss Katcher one last hug and started out side. As she passed Cealon she said, “ I’ll let you say your goodbye to your mother in private.” And she walked out of the door. As Kari went to the stable she could hear Miss Katcher crying as she said goodbye to her son. She felt bad then, because Cealon was the only person Miss Katcher had since her husband passed away seven years ago, but Cealon is stubborn, and insisted to come to make sure Kari was alright, before he said his final goodbye. Kari was just finishing her tack on her mare, Drifter, when Cealon came out. “Sorry it took so long Kari. You know how emotional my mother can be.” He grabbed his own tack and started putting on his gelding, Lightning. “Don’t worry about it Cealon. She’s just afraid of losing the most precious person in her life.” She finished her own tack and walked the mare out of the stall. “You’re wrong there Kari.” Kari gave him a confused look. “ What I meant to say was that you’re like a daughter to her and she’s afraid of losing you too. Why do you think I’m coming with you?” He said meaningfully. He had just finish his tack and brought Lightning out where Kari and Drifter were. “Thank you Cealon. That makes me feel good.” Kari said calmly as she mounted Drifter, and as Cealon Mounted Lightning. “You ready?” she said looking at Cealon. He turned to face her. “If you are?” “Alright let’s go.” She smiled at him, then turned and whispered into Drifter’s ear,” Gallop.” She ran through the gate waving back at Miss Katcher, Cealon right behind her. They galloped until noon, when they stopped on the edge of a forest to eat lunch. “That was an amazing ride.” Kari said as she started a fir. “You’ll never get used to the feeling. It still surprises me and I’ve been riding way longer than you have.” He said sitting down next to her. “Question, do you know if the fish in that stream over there are good to eat?” she asked as she pointed off into the distance. Just a little while a way sat a fresh, cool, crystal blue stream, which glistened at the suns touch. “Sorry, no. I thought we brought fish.” He stood up walking to Drifter, Kari held the food, and reached for the food bag. “We did, I was just thinking we might as well use are resources, instead of wasting them.” “You’ve always had a good head on your shoulders Kari.” He said to her a slight grin on his face. “ I’ll go check out the stream.” With that he grabbed a net they had brought along, in case something like this would happen, and went to check out the stream. As he came back, 3 fish in his hand, he noticed that the fire was burning but there was no sign of Kari anywhere. “Kari!” “I’m up here Cealon.” Cealon looked up to find Kari in a tree. “What on earth are you doing up there Kari?” “ Just seeing what’s ahead of us. The sight is absolutely beautiful. Come on up Cealon and have a look.” “ I think I’ll have to pass on that invitation.” He said with a little chuckle in his voice.” Why don’t you come down and help me make lunch. I caught some fish, and I’m about to eat them raw, I’m so hungry.” He held them up so Kari could see then walked to the fire. Kari jumped down landing briskly on her feet; she was about fifteen feet off the ground, and followed loyally after Cealon. Once, they had finished eating, they got back on there horses and started to ride again into the early sunset.
