I'm curious to know if anyone here has ever had their work published in any way shape or form (including magazines or self publishing)?

Had a story and a poem published in the school literary magazine, but I don't know if that counts. I'm thinking of submitting a short story to a real literary magazine, but it's hard finding one to send it to. The genre is a bit ambiguous, and the magazines can get mad at you if you don't follow their guidelines exactly. I've only sent one short story to a magazine before (we had to do it for our creative writing class), and I got a nasty reply from them because I didn't follow their guidelines. I don't mind rejection, but what I got was beyond rude.

Yeah... the only publication I've ever gotten is in those cheap syndicated 'young artist collection' things that everyone in AP English gets. >_< Not that I've really tried much in that venue. I wrote a novel, but I'd be far too embarrassed to submit it. It's pretty lame.

Newspaper twice and school literary magazine once. All of them were poems. I tried to send short stories, but they were "too hard to read" gonk , which was not a compliment. Right now, I am trying to hone my skill by writing more in French. Yes, I've finally accepted that if I write in English, I'll have to use French-English dictionary in order to get the right word and the story will become incoherent, so why not just write in French and translate only once it's done? The story flows WAY better this way.
Conclusion:
French base for good flow and eccentricity.
English base for good magic and casual storytelling.
Chinese base for... debate ans spiel?
Sorry, looks this has become a rant sweatdrop I'm really pissed at myself for the fact that I can't write a good story that's longer than 100 words.

If it's scifi/fantasy, or even just leans in that direction you could try Fantasy&ScienceFiction...I guess you could call it a magazine, their guidelines don't seem to crazy and they've been around for like 50 years and they publish a real variety within the genre. I'm going to try to submit a short story once I have one that I like enough. Here's the link. FSF Magazine

The one I submitted before could have been considered historical fiction. The one I'm considering submitting is fantasy-esque, but it takes place within a girl's dream and is kind of symbolic. I'm probably going to send it to a fantasy magazine, like the one you've mentioned, which I have checked out before. I'm wary about sending it to a regular magazine because it's probably too fantasy and I've realized alot of magazines have a sort of adversion to fantasy.

I think a lot of places and a lot of people for that matter are biased against anything scifi/fantasy. They assume just because of the genre that it can't possibly be good writing or good storytelling. Which is just stupid in my opinion. 3nodding

Yes, fantasy isn't seen as a credible genre most of the time. Part of me doesn't like that; part of me can understand with all of the generic dreck that gets published. It's a genre with so much potential, and yet very little of that potential is used.

Oh my goodness the Marathon's Recueil is here! Waah!
Back to our lambs.
Do you (anyone who visits this thread) know any French magazine where I can submit my works? Or at least a Canadian English magazine? Most publishers I can find are Americain... If French, it's often in Europe.
Any genre has the potential to be seriously messed up or the opposite. It's up to us to exploit it for the better.

I agree with the comments about fantasy. In regards to publishing, I've decided to leave the genre alone for a while until it becomes fashionable again; I'm focusing on my first "serious" novel at the moment.
As to what I've had published, I've had a few short stories in a few anthologies (one was from a competiton, others were not) and poetry in a couple of collections of local authors. I hope to work seriously on my novel as soon as my A2s are done next year ^_^.

I've only ever had some of my poetry and two short stories published in a small-town newspaper. I hope to publish my current novel someday...maybe.

Well, I had two poems published by poetry.com (if any of you don't know what that is, see to it that it stays that way). In middle school, I put out one issue of a school newspaper for independent study, and technically, I've had several news articles published from when I was news reporter for my 4-H club. Also, I was editor of the senior literary magazine, which included one of my short stories.

generally I write 4-5 articles per year for the magazine I work with out of California... I've published, maybe 10-15 articles over the past several years. That figure's about to rocket though, as, I will become a more regular columnist for the magazine.
Not bad for a 16 year old that started writing for them when I was 13 ^-^

I had a poem submitted in a poetry competition book thing. We did it at school, so it wasn't much of a big deal, but I suppose yes, my work has been published. ><
