Shaia watched the children that played outside from her bed, wishing she could be out of bed, too. She was about 13, with black hair and yellow eyes. Her torso, forehead, and legs were bandaged in white gauze. Sighing, she picked up a children's book she was trying to read. Mr. Midzorik came in and said something, but Shaia shook her head.
"Wakarimasen," she replied. (I don't understand)
"You go outside soon, yes?" he replied in broken English.
"I hope so," she smiled. "I miss being able to run around."
"You lucky girl," he shook his head. "Lucky and alive."
"Thanks to you," laughed the girl. "Arigatoo." (Thank you)
For a moment, Mr. Midzorik did not reply. Suddenly, he seemed very sad, "I wondering something."
"What's wrong?" Shaia tensed up.
"No," he sighed. "You like it here?"
"Hai." (Yes)
"How you like staying here?"
"With you?!"
"Hai. You stay as daughter."
"Daughter?" Shaia's eyes widened.
"Until memory come back," he added.
"Arigatoo. Doomo arigatoo gozaimasu!!" she hugged the man's stomache. (Thank you. Thank you very much!!)

Shaia stretched luxuriously in the sunshine. It was good to be outside. Although her white bandages still covered 60% of her body, she was running around once again. Her gaurdian, Dr. Midzorik, promised that she'd be able to take the gauze off tomorrow, so what was one day?
"Ug, I'm out of shape," she stuck out her tongue. "I'd better do something about that once I'm at full speed again." I wonder how long it will be until I am discovered here. There is no if; they will find me.
"Shaia! Come inside!" Mrs. Midzorik called from the porch. "You are not allowed to be moving around so much." (Her English was better than Dr. Midzorik's, mainly because she had studied it.)
The girl sighed, "So much for enjoying the outdoors." She placidly followed the plump woman into the Midzorik home/clinic.

Shaia was running around the town barefoot and happier than she had been in a long time. Although her legs had been severly damaged, only criss-cross scars hidden under her long pants remained from the tattered limbs. I've slowed, but not much, thought Shaia. This gigai was made to take a beating, but I might be overdue for a new one.
"Hey! Grab it! Quick!" a group of boys ran right in front of Shaia, chasing a small white kitten. Shaia closed her eyes and sighed softly to herself.
"Ha! We've got you now!" one of the boys said as they cornered the tiny kitten in an alley that lead to nowhere. As they slowly closed in on the cat with strings and cans, it jumped high into the air and slashed at the closest boy's face. Using the boy as a step, it leaped over the rest of the gang and landed right in front of the mysterious yellow-eyed girl.
"Here, that cat's ours!" one snot-nosed brat said.
"And it's toast!" another sniggered.
Shaia tapped a wooden staff on the ground in front of her, "If you think that I value your lives more than I do this kitten," she lifted her head so her eyes shone wildly, "you're wrong- dead wrong."
"Look at her eyes!" one boy cried.
"She's a demon!"
"She'll eat us alive!"
Wailing, they ran past Shaia into the street and disappeared. The white kitten looked up at it's heroine and mewed.
"Don't give me that," growled Shaia. "What's your name, anyway?"
The cat mewed.
"Taiin it is. Let's go," smiled Shaia. Hitan appeared next to her.
"I see you've found a friend," he stated.
"What do you care?" the girl snapped.
"It's stopped raining," he disappeared again.
